Philly 0 Report post Posted March 29, 2018 Nice, Mike. Some more ideas to play with. I was going through my materials today and found that I had more small chenille than I'll ever use so I took fisherboy's idea of furling chenille and ran with it. I found it produces a mini-mop piece of material. So I spent a rainy afternoon furling it. Once I got the hang of it, it took a couple of minutes to furl a piece. Got some really nice pieces out of it. Much brighter colors than I've found in mops and some that have a built in sparkle. I'll take a picture of them when I finish the last couple of colors. fshng2 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2018 I really like Bass Eelie Is that furled? Thanks Mike. The fish are going to Hop on that Hopper. I like how the antennae seem to grow out of the head like the naturals. The Bass Eelie is not furled but rather retwisted. First the blue MoP is cut long then untwisted. The mid point has a 3" section of mono looped around it and the tag ends are snugged up and held in my tying vise. Then a very very sparing dot of tear mender is applied to #1 leg of the MoP. A dot of TM is applied only in the valley of #1 leg and only every other valley. Lastly the MoP is rewound making sure #2 leg follows #1 leg valleys, where TM is. I put a bulldog clip on the tags of the MoP and a weight to apply tension, then let it dry about 10 minutes. After drying I remove the mono and it's ready to tie on a hook MoP style. Notes: 1. Tear Mender will not unravel in water. According to the specs Two pieces of fabric bonded in an over-lay manner cannot be pulled apart after 3 minutes. In 15 minutes that same bond is permanent and will not wash out. 2. The Cinder MoP-Worm did not use tear mender as it is a single untwisted MoP. Philly 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2018 More ideas to play. Very nice. Never thought to unfurl a mop piece. I did this one up looking to come up with a dragonfly nymph. I've got four wraps of non-lead wire wrapped on the shank under the thorax. Did find a couple of pieces from the swap that have a more definitive dragonfly nymph shape. Somewhere there has to be black dragonfly nymphs.
Mike West 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2018 Look what I found at Hobby Lobby yesterday. They didnt have the Bernat Baby Blanket yarn I was looking for but I had to buy these two. I wish this first one was half this diameter. I bet they make it you probably just have to contact manufacturer. I also tested it with a lighter and you can melt this and taper the end. They had it in many colors but Im not that rich figured Id get white and I can dye it any color I want. Im thinking with a foam head or a deer hair head I got me a Sluggo. Probably cast like a wet sock but I got a 9 wt & 10 wt if they do. And then this stuff...Life time supply here and same deal Ill dye the white sections myself. Here it is laying next to a magnum dragon tail for comparison. You can see the burn marks from my lighter missing around with it. Heat gun would probably be a better idea. Edit: Im looking at my own pictures in this post and thinking that you could probably taper them with scissors.
Mike West 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2018 Still not happy with them but they’ll catch fish. Going to take a break from this pattern for a while I got other stuff to do.
Philly 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2018 Mike, make sure you use a synthetic fabric dye. I've tried dying something similar I picked up at A.C. Moore with dye from a tie-dye kit and all I've gotten is pastel colors rather than bright ones.
AZWoolybugger 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2018 Acid dyes won't work on Poly. Try a dye made for polyester. Rit Dye More may work, I haven't used it. https://www.ritdye.com/faqs/dyeable-fabrics-and-materials/#faq-1725 Fiber: 100% Polyester Brand: Yarn Bee
fshng2 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2018 Nice Dragon Fly Nymph Philly. One day last year while bass fishing all the Dragon flies in the pond were dive bombing the water and laying their eggs. I was in the midst of a major Dragon Fly Hatch! Needless to say the bass were reckless and jumping all over and some real close about 8 ft from my waders. They weren't interested in anything I threw until I put on a 5/8" brown foam beetle. Only thing....they all would look at it, but no takers.. I studied the Dragons and noticed when they hit the water they would skate for two to three feet then lift off again. This happened so fast the bass rarely got them. So I cast my beetle very low (about 12") to the water, and just before it touched down I moved my rod tip to the left or right about 3ft. This would cause the beetle to mimic exactly what the Dragons were doing and I would get hit about 2 out of 3 times. What an adrenaline rush!
fshng2 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2018 Mike your yarn does look similar to the magnum dragon tail. I would be interested to know how it casts too. I have some similar stuff in several colors, I might do some experimenting. Nice MoP hoppers too. I'm not sure why your not happy with them, I think they look awesome. Henry Denson "That brown one almost looks like a small mouse." Yep put a mouse tail under that MoP and see what the monsters think.
