Are all craft furs the same?

Recommended Posts

I have extra select and a few patches from the craft store(Brown, black, white). The craft store stuff is perfectly fine if your tying flies about 2"and under. Easier to find better colors in the extra select from the fly shop though.

I like to dye mine to meet my requirements, last pick is the 4" long stuff with flash

Are you using dye for clothes to do the craft fur?

clothes dye will wash out. because of the properties of craft fur you are not really dyeing but coloring the outside as dyes will not absorb. I made my own dyes for this purpose (trade secret)

I incorporate the craft fur with my Lasher material to make articulated flies with no wire/braid/mono/etc. swims like a real fish. I dye my own materials (eyelash) for the back half of fly. also a synthetic that I made a dye for.

Not sure what Lasher is....

The gliiter craft fur I've seen doesn't have but one flash filament in about 4"square. Amazing to me how this stuff is artificially made.... long strands (guard hairs) and some "fur" underneath. Coloring with sharpie on limited basis and gotta use bodkin to seperate some fusing from the "ink". Easy enough to incorporate other flashes for sure.

sometimes being a dealer has its advantages. lasher is what I call a type of eyelash yarn. as for the craft fur it has a lot of flash in it and some goes longer than 4" most craft fur is sewn in.
