March Flies From The Vise

Amazing ties and photos so far.

Here's a few Bling midges and larva, a couple of DDTs and some hackle stackers.

Adirondack goodness; toned down the body color a bit although I, and a few stupid cutts I've met, are partial to bright orange, too.

hook - Dai Riki 300 #12

thread - MFC 6/0 hot orange

body - Australian possum orange brown

Wing - calftail white

hackle - grizzly/brown

Regards,

Scott

That, sir, is a beautiful fly. All of your ties inspire me to tie better but that one is the mutts nuts.

Any suggestion for a sub for the ozzie possum?

Any suggestion for a sub for the ozzie possum?

I tied this version as an attempt to approach the original recipe. For day-to-day fishing I'd use whatever dubbing was available - rabbit (leave the guard hairs in if you want it spikey), hare's ear, chopped craft yarn, squirrel, etc; the fish won't care. To tell the truth, I'd be inclined to use 1mm foam for the body; it floats a lot longer and the cutts on the little blue lines I fish like them a lot.

Regards,

Scott

Hi Scott,

I have one of these that Fran tied way back in 1998. It was the first time that I went to his shop. This one has a dyed deer hair rusty orange wing and is a size 16. I used to have two, but lost one of them years ago. Here's a quick pic of it.

Regards,

Mark

Still dreaming of the Drakes on my river. I like this pattern for the weeks leading up to the hatch.
