Guys and gals, my name is Kenneth Kloeppel and I’ve been a member of this forum for quite some time. I am the chairman for the 2009 Kentuckiana Fly Fishing Show sponsored by Derby City Fly Fishers. The show will be held January 31, 2009 and hosted in Louisville KY. If you’re not familiar with the show, it has grown from a small tradeshow to what now supports 80+ vendors and over 1000 visitors. It’s a great time, and I personally look forward to seeing familiar faces and all of the new gear each year. Part of our show always includes a large area for fly tiers to hang out and showcase their work. The booth space is FREE to all tiers, we just ask that you demonstrate fly tying to the masses and have a good time. We always have plenty of chairs for people to pull up a seat and talk with you about tying. Before I was as involved in organizing the show, I spent much of the day with the tiers. I'm heading to TX next week to hunt the little ghosts. I just cut some of the hairs off and put them in a baggie.

a lot of times you can find nicely tanned pelts at those generic tourist shops around popular attractions. then you can bleach them, dye them, do whatever.

if you're going to worry about dudes losing a few estaz flies here and there, think about all the rapalas and rubber worms snagged on the bottom of lakes from the bass fisherman. what about all the lead head jigs with curly tails snagged in the trees by the crappie guys. as john stossel would say, "give me a break"

i posted a while back that i was going to go to the betsie river in late august. you guys said i should wait, so i did. well not really, i just had too much work to do and couldn't get away. well i'm finally going this weekend and have heard from some people up there that the salmon are running in a big way. what do you guys recommend fishing with. i'm not going to have much time to tie anything so i'll stop by the local fly shop up there to pick up some flies and some leader. also, i have a 9wt TFO that i'm going to take. is that overkill? the guys up there laughed when i said i had a 5wt to bring; they said i better bring my 9wt. thx for the input on such short notice.... k

i shoot a canon 20d and the 70-200 f2.8. i love that lens. i looked at the 100-400 and read that they tend to have a vacuum effect and suck dust. i picked up my lens used for $700. if i were buying new, i'd cough up the extra $400 and get the IS version of this lens. also, i would recommend sticking with the L series lenses. good glass makes all the difference. ...k

russ, being a computer guy and a photographer i can tell you that the machine i run is a 2.4Ghz with 512MB ram. Yes, it seems crappy, but it actually does everything that i need, and i process a lot of photos. however, the number one thing that you need to invest in is your disk drives. now my computer guy side kicks in. let me preface this by saying i build a lot of high end servers for clients so i'm familiar with the hardware aspects of what i'm about to tell you. your photos are more of an asset than you can ever imagine, especially if you shoot for a living. the problem with single large harddrive is if it fails you'll be lucky to get your photos back. i have are 4 500GB SATA drives configured RAID5. i would have done RAID5+1, but my controller only has four ports and i needed space. with 4 of these drives in this configuration i get 1.5 terabytes of storage. the NUMBER 1 benefit to this configuration is the data redundancy that i get. any one of my drives can fail and i will not lose my data. so that is how i have my harddrives setup. the other thing i do is periodically burn DVDs of my pruned albums and store them offsite. a little overkill? maybe. but then again i have that piece of mind that i'm probably not going to lose anything. ...k

perhaps i'm thinking of the wrong fish. i caught something that looked very similar trolling off the FL Keys. i thought it was a bonito. being the type that will try to eat anything once, i took it back to the cleaning station. upon fileting it the meat was like blood red and had a very strong odor. it had been on ice for about 2 hours before we got back. it didn't look or smell very tasty so i threw it back in the cooler and caught two nice bull sharks on it later that night. i'm going to have to dig up some pictures and figure out what i had. .. k

thanks for the responses guys. yeah, my toss up is between the renzetti and the DK Trekker. i like both, but i keep going back to the renzetti. it may just be the name. thanks again... k

ok, i know there was a big fat topic on vises, and i've read the majority of the 20 pages on that. but i was wondering if anyone has any experience behind a renzetti presentation 2000? i'd like to get a new vice and i'm willing to spend $250 on one. it is a good looking vise and i've read a lot of good things about the renzetti products and have had other renzettis recommended. i tie quite a few flies in the 1/0 to 3/0 range for saltwater, and of course many in the 12-20 range for trout. the renzetti presentation is appealing because the one set of jaws covers the entire range. not to start another 20 page topic, what do you guys think? thanks.. k

yeah, and they make great shark bait. they have a very bloody flesh, stinky, and sharks come from miles around. ... k

my wife and i happen to be going up there for labor day weekend to see some friends who have a house on crystal lake. so with that being a base camp, i'm open to driving a bit if you guys have some places to recommend. thanks again for the tips.... k

i'm heading up to frankfort michigan the first weekend in September to try some steelhead fishing in the betsie river. what would you guys recommend i put in my fly box? also, any tips are much appreciated. thx... k

littlejohn, i fished PC for the first time last fall. we mainly fished the flats in the west bay. while the fishing was slow when we went, we still ate trout every night and i landed a decent 28" red. a buddy of mine actually asked me today if i wanted to go down to his condo the first week in august. that fishing report is really starting to get me pumped.

nice fish. i thought pike were really boney. is that true? if so, what are the tips for fileting? ..k

i caught some short nose gar down below KY Dam several weeks ago with a size 12 black wooly bugger. the short nose have a little more "meat" in their mouth than a long nose, so it worked pretty good. you miss a lot, but you'll catch some. .. k

i tied up 2 flies to take with me to ky lake this past weekend and forgot them! but i did see lots of gar so i pulled out a wolly bugger and was able to land one on it. lots of hook ups. if you want to catch gar, go there. ... k

being a bowfisherman i can say those guys are indeed idiots. i would have called them in as well. probably a couple of rednecks. in KY you can only bowfish non-game species which are your carp, gar, bluegill, etc. with the exception of paddlefish, if it has a size or creel limit, they are off limits. good call and calling them in. crap like that makes us all look bad. ...k

i don't know about epoxy, but on a similar subject i've found that hard as nails colored with rit dye works good. i've tried some different fingernail polishes but none seem to dry as hard as sally's HAN. another thing i do with the clear HAN is get some ultra fine glitter from the craft store and funnel it in the bottle. shake well and you have a great sparkle coat for your saltwater flies. instead of messing with the epoxy i'll build up a thread base and then do 4 or 5 coats of HAN. ... k

jim, i'm not real familiar with pentax equipment as i'm a canon nut myself. the one thing i can say about canon and nikon, and it probably goes for everything else, there isn't an end all be all lens. i'm currently shooting a canon 20d and i carry a 17mm-55mm L series and a 70mm-200mm L series. both lenses retail for about $1200 each, but are worth every penny. the quality of the glass is really one of the most important things to look at. most manufacturers supply fall-off graphs where you can compare the light statistics on the lenses. my next purchase will be a straight telephoto and not a zoom. i'll probably go to the 500mm L series once i win the lottery or rob a bank but in all seriousness if you're going to be doing a lot of wildlife photography, you may want to consider a straight instead of a zoom. just my $0.02. ... k
