under a size 20,i have found that hackle is not needed.on that note,the past couple of yearzs i have strayed away from hackled dry flies,except for brookie streams.I find myself using comparaduns,usuals,cdc emergers and feel i have increased my strike ratio dramatically,on my favorite stream here in wv,i simply use the flies dave bretmeier constructs in "midge majic" and have found that simply thread and cdc work very well.Although some days they dont,like the days i watch a 8 inch brown follow a real mayfly for a few feet inspecting it and then turns away,on days like this,well lets just sAy,u get allot of time practicing your casting. shane

Fish with them.....Heck my fly box,is more than half filled with flies ranging in size#18 all the way down to # 28.West virginias limestone enriched "elk river" picky trout,year round eat midges and if you r not willing to throw some #24's or even 32's,most daysyou r going to come away with only a fraction of the fish you would catch if not using small stuff.Once you,get over the small size and tell yourslef you r going to have to go small,it is very rewarding and now more thna half the time,no matter what fly i am using,i usually have a # 24 cdc and thread trailing my point fly.It has increased my catch 10 fold. my 2 cents watch you will catch is anything from 8 inch gubbys,to 20 something behimiths.And if you r any thing like me ,you will b hooked on midging. shane

like the ad says,,its hard to just take one.But i guess if pressed,it would be a wooly bugger.whenver i cover new water,a bugger has brought more fish to hand and shown the whereabouts of missed fish,so i can figure them out with something else!

trout flies.I taught myself with the text,Orvis beginners guide to fly tying.My first fly i tied was a wooly bugger.The first fish i ever caught on a fly i tied was on a hares ear.18 inch brown. shane p.s.that was 17 years ago and i am still learning.All be it mostly trout flies,but now i rarely fish hackled dries,with the exception of brookie streams.I now mainly fish ,comparaduns,the usual,and small 20-#28 cdc and thread midges,and allotof emerger type flies and recently more soft hackles.Man do i love this sport.

daichi 1110 wide gap,for #16-28,,love the the big eye,especially for the the smaller bugs.Daichi 1870 swimming nymph for most of my ntmphs and as for soft hackles and streamers,whatever is the best deal shane

Caught this one on what i caught pretty much all the others on,A wooly bugger and reservation hobo tandem.This one took the hobo,the otheres were about 60% buggers and 40%hobo. shane

i voted 10 to twenty.Only because every fly is different and some r more complicated than others.But,generally speaking,after 10 or so ties or less,i am usually very adapt at tying that respective fly. shane

I just wanted an opinion on which one was better. Not on which vise is the best. In don holbrocks book,"midge magic"Most all of the flies use no thread any smaller than 8/0,even the #32's ,for which west virginias elk river is so bedeviled to have in abundance. shane
