  1. Monic makes a clear line...............I have used this line in 6wt and 9wt...... http://www.monic.com/FLYLINES.HTM Jim Teeny makes an intermediate line with a clear tip..........have not used this line, but have used the Teeny mini-tip line in 5 and 8wt.....love it.....especially the 8wt, use it for salmon and steelhead http://www.jimteeny.com/indexMain.html?content=catalog&page=jtCatalog/catalog/catIntro.html I'm pretty sure most other fly line manufacturers have some sort of clear tip streamer line
  2. very nice idea......spruce up the room........ and I'm pretty sure it would make a good gift to a family member........
  3. there is the same outfit for sale on Ebay at the moment.......it is up to 145 dollars..........17 bids.......and 20 bucks to ship........ Hey Ditz............I've purchased a few used rods over the years.......only one was a waste of time..........most hardcore guys don't give up their gear unless something really goes wrong in life.........most of the rods I purchased were by folks just getting into fly fishing and purchased more rod than they could handle......... just because you paid 600 dollars for a rod that is the greatest new thing, does not mean you will be the worlds greatest caster with no effort, no skill or no practice.........start cheap, find your groove and move up from there........... the summer heat always makes me think of salmon and steelhead fishing......but I have to wait until October
  4. so, how does it cast?? the only one who can say if you made a mistake is you...........either it will feel right............or it won't !!!!
  5. IMX you could probably get a used Loomis on e-bay........for under 200 bucks..........the echo rods in an 8 wt will run you about 190 dollars........ St. Croix Imperial --190-- would be an economically sound good choice.....you could probably find a used St. Croix Legend Ultra for around 2 bills also I don't like spending more than 200 bucks on a rod..........I don't mind a rod being used--- so long as it wasn't abused........ ****EDIT: I just laughed hard at this, considering most of my rods cost over 200 dollars----I have had a few 700 dollar rods: Winston Switch, Loomis Whisper Creek--but I paid 325 or so each......both were used, but in great condition......Loved the Beulah switch rods too--4oo bucks or so.........so, I don't like spending more than 200 bucks on a rod, but I have been known to do so......all those rods have already been re-sold to someone else..........I will say the whisper creek was the smoothest rod I have ever put my hands on and the Winston switch was a ROCKET LAUNCHER with Beulah Elixer 6/7 line***** I have not heard a bad thing about the Echo rods...........has anyone?? winston does produce lower end rods that are supposed to be pretty darn good---the Passport is 199 dollars and the VSL is 299 cabela's -- Blaach........ hope you pick a great one........... old but good to see: http://www.yellowsto...versionsBIG.htm 2011 5 wt shootout with the 199 passport being high on the list---the list is littered with rods a normal man can't afford http://www.yellowsto...ht.shootout.htm
  6. Simple pattern: streamer hook lead copper braid or gold braid wrapped for body barred olive rabbit strip (pine squirrel works great for smaller sculpins) olive wool for head if you wish, tie in a piece red yarn underneath the chin you can also tie in some pheasant feathers for fins---but then the fly really isn't that simple--but looks killer pic below is of the fly described above then a pic of nice wild brown that ate the sculpin !!! show some pics of what you came up with........ even just wrapping barred olive rabbit with a wool head will look like a sculpin.........as stated above, there are many ways to tie a sculpin pattern......I like simple though..........
  7. Those stoneflies look killer !!! Hmmm.....I wonder what your boxes will look like when you get back from the trip??? mine always start out neat........and by the time I get home, I have flies all over the place........
  8. this will trickle down to each states Nat. Resource enforcement agency less fish will not bother the folks who fish no matter what...........what it will affect is license sales and "I fish opening day" fellers (whom I don't mind) less license sales will mean less revenue for each outfit to operate..........less money = fewer programs, fewer patrols, higher license fees and maybe a few jobs lost I honestly think the Commonwealth of PA stocks way too many trout.......the people have been spoiled and unrealistically and honestly believe there should be 100 plus trout in every hole they fish
  9. 8 weight just sounds better ....... I owned a loomis GL3 9 foot 8 wt once..........fished it with a Teeny mini-sink tip line.........that rod was a rocket launcher with that setup--used it for steelies and salmon in Pulaski, NY and Erie tribs there are so many rod makers out there..........where do you start?? have fun finding that new rod
  10. Neo-- that crazy redhorse looks pretty darn cool !!! this is a great thread..........I have none of my first flies.......I started tying in college and would spend every spare minute I had at the fly shop.......I'd ask how to tie a pattern, they'd show me (spring creek outfitters in Garrett County, Md) then I would buy the materials and tie up a box full of them......once I was comfortable with that fly, I'd move on to another......think it went--- bitch creek, bugger, hares ear........I worked at the local state park and I would just give the flies away........it was all just tying practice............ all I can say to the new fly tyer is to : tie, tie , tie and tie some more............focus on the task at hand and don't get ahead of yourself.........all flies will catch fish.......neat ones, pretty ones, ugly ones........you will find a comfort zone soon enough........and then you can expand.......then expand again.....there are so many books (those things with paper in them) out there, that you could tie a different fly every day for the rest of your life..... I like to keep things simple and buggy looking..........and a fly that has caught a few fish--that is chewed up and pretty much nothing more than thread--will still catch fish!!! I've found some guys get caught up in the : his flies are better than mine...........well, you tied it........fish it with confidence and it will catch some fish......don't worry about how the other guys flies look.........be proud of your flies..........and have confidence in your flies........ here's a few pics of this years ties: (currently tying up salmon and steelhead flies--October will be here before we know it) my first flies were not the greatest looking---but they caught fish in the Savage River, N. Br. Potomac River, Youghiogheny River, Big Spring Creek, Yellow Breeches--- I am a picture hoarder................ I am a prepper when I tie.........but it really depends on the pattern
  11. eggs rule........ clear Hot Glue with thread underneath (as stated above) gives a killer look.......when you cool the egg, it gets a milky color to it -- rainbows are egg thieves..........I've caught trout middle of summer on eggs.........before a nice mayfly hatch on eggs............. browns and brooks will eat eggs too.............. I just started using Bill Skilton's -- Bills micro flash egg yarn -- to make sucker spawn type flies---I call them Crazy Spawn....they look killer and super simple to tie--as most egg patterns are........one little trick really makes this material look killer ( tie in as you would a sucker spawn with a loop in the rear, then twist the 2 pieces of material.........the material coils up on itself and gives a great looking cluster effect to the fly)
  12. thanks for the nice words...... if you were in my neck of the woods, then you must have been a very long way from home......I hope you flew !!! I drove to Atlanta once.......don't plan on doing that again !!!!
  13. looking good.........pretty sure a troutie would smash it.......... like the color with the silver under the green larva lace
  14. Hey Ed, I love larva lace..........fell in love with it early on in my fly tying days.............great segmentation with minimal amount of work--putting wire inside the lace gives a great effect........or wrap the wire next to the lace most of the caddis around me are minty green underneath and darker on top---so, I use chart thread, tie in some peacock herl and lay it on top of the hook--then wrap the larva face forward........I use peacock herl for the head or black lite-brite that is then picked out......... another easy material to use is UTC Ultra wire.......simple caddis: chart wire and black lite-brite for a head, picked out..........doesn't get any easier and the fish love it........brassie that is beefed up the feather dilema can be solved by working with CDC............the CDC oiler puffs are great for wings on dry fly patterns.........easy to work with too.....if you need longer wings or want to tie a body with CDC---you can find feathers by Petitjean $ or Trout Hunter $ I'll attach a pic of caddis larva, my Death Stonefly tied with larva lace and a dry fly tied using CDC.......... One important thing to remember when you are just starting out is to stick with one pattern at a time............tie 2 dozen before you switch to another fly.......otherwise, your fly tying area will be a mess and you'll end up with 6 different flies that took 2 hours to tie.......... my mind used to always drift away to new creations.......and before I knew it, most of the materials I owned were sitting on top of my fly tying desk......not a good thing !!!!
  15. My first huge trout only had one eye.............I was fishing a green salmon egg and a maggot...........I was still in high school.........guess I made a drift on the right side of the fish..........that trout was about 23 inches..........caught on Fishing Creek, outside of Benton PA.......... watched one of Wendell "Ozzie" Ozefovich's videos and he showed a rainbow with one eye...........then, he showed the fish again---this time it was a year later--same fish, same spot, only he said the fish was longer and heavier.............it was either the Discovery video or the Feeding Lies video......... In all the years of fishing, that rainbow is the only fish I have caught with one eye
  16. Nicely Done.........I hope the smile is still on your face..........landed some tanks what was your most reliable fly??
  17. awesome job on the Carp........carp fishing is a blast on a fly rod...........find them in the spring when they are on a spawn run and you will be in for a day you will never forget !!!!
  18. Holy wowsers........that last brown is absolutely amazing looking............
  19. Found a package of the dubbing--it was more like dust.......it is seriously OLD.......... --- goose biot for tail, brown larva lace rib, (brown or tan) swiss straw or turkey for wing pad, black/orange feather--trimmed top and bottom, biot for antennae and rusty AMD dubbing -- if you use a dubbing loop for the thorax--you don't need a feather for legs I used phantom red power pro for the ribbing, twisted pretty sure I purchased the dubbing at Spring Creek Outfitters -- the year was probably 98 or 99
  20. What, did you need a little carpy snack before you released him?? hahahah
  21. was that a greenie or a hybrid? mean fish !!! Determination !!! Don't think I would be dipping my toes in that water !!!!
  22. maybe a hybrid...........green sunfish mate with anything I love fishing in the winter..........hate the summer........if every day was 70 degrees or less.........I'd be one happy dude
  23. my main idea was ISO and BWO............but seeing a sulphur here, cahill there........caddis skitter here....... helped out............. rusty spinner caught the most...............followed by BWO..........and then it was a free for all after those two.............a few casts without interest and I changed it up....... a friend went up on Monday in the PM and caught some fish on a sulphur / cahill emerger pattern..........he said he never changed his fly !!! the hard thing was fishing for a few hours in the morning.......then waiting til' 6pm to fish again................
  24. One afternoon I pulled into the parking lot and there were 9 cars parked in the first lot..........6 of the 9 cars had PA plates........mine made 7...hysterical stuff stonefly was a simple stonefly construction using rusty tan dubbing.......brown tails and antennae..........I have none of them left.........and I have not tied one that color in about 10 years........the stonefly matched the color of the rocks...........and when in doubt, use a glowbug !!!! the large rainbows cannot resist them, especially in the fall I left Garrett County in 2000 or so and I have been back only once since then..........I fished the heck out of that river with many LARGE trout being caught in my 3 years in Garrett County (n. br. potomac-youghiogheny-savage-casselman in MD and Big Spring Creek in PA) 1997-2000 were very good fishing years for me.......... One day during the fall---- I noticed about dozen or so DEAD MONSTER BROWNS............honestly, they didn't even look like normal fish.........they were amazing looking, well beside the fact that they were all dead.......spawn stress.......... there are areas of that stream during the Fall where we almost always caught a fish over 20 inches...........it was fun just to bag a day of school and fish the river.............the one big rainbow I landed found its way into American Angler magazine.......via MD DNR......... that river brings back some sweet memories.............. ( I might have some remnants of the dubbing in my desk.......if I find it--I'll take a pic and post it ) That is one amazing river to call your HOME WATERs
