  1. I might be there, it all depends on the weather. It's a little bit of a hike from North Carolina! I've been to every one for the past 10-12 years. It's one of the countries great shows! I think it's because it is NOT run by the organization that does most of the rod shows in the country, it is put on with passion by a club and it's members: http://www.mffc.org/ The new venue absolutely ROCKS! I'm sure this year will be even better now that the organizers know what to expect. The Detroit-style Coney sounds good! I'm a little tired of cole slaw Coneys!
  2. Wow!!! Those are some VERY nice ties! Can we look forward to receiving copies in Shoe's swap?
  3. Thanks all, voting done! It sure is nice to have more just than two choices for a change! After voting, I got to thinking... there could be a prize for the person whose votes have the most winning entries. Just don't ask me to figure out how!
  4. QUOTE (flyfishenvy @ Jan 22 2005, 02:35 PM) peddler, is the whole body made out of fox? or did you put a body of chennile down first then wrap the fox in the loop like hackle. i like that, and i love to use fox, but never thought of using it like that. flyfishenvy, I tied that fly pattern while fooling around. As far as I know there is no set pattern. I've used both micro-chenille and a dubbed body (out of fox fur underfur) and think I like the dubbed body best. A little silver ribbing sets it off nicely too I feel. If you come up with a better body, please post!
  5. I must have bumped my head last night! I think I've scoured this whole site looking for a place to vote on the fly contest and cannot find it. Is there a contest going on right now? Best, Jack (waiting to say 'DOH!')
  6. Color me in if more room opens up!
  7. Head - Black bead Body - Dubbing or fine chenille Rib - Silver wire or tinsel Tail - Arctic fox Over body - Arctic fox from dubbing loop Thread – Black 12/0 Benacchi
  8. I figure if I can't tie with them they would make a good Indian head dress next Holloween! No... really, I got some of these before but from a craft store and they looked man-made. If you saw these feathers up close they are pretty awesome. There must be SOME pattern out there I can use these on.
  9. Help! I need some patterns to use these on. 'Lil help!
  10. You said 'no photo's' but I'm addicted! Here's a KILLER pattern and color for bass and bluegill. It's arctic fox from a dubbing loop with an arctic fox tail. I just picked up some more in rust and white at the Salem Orvis blow-out store

Thanks guys, and thanks Photoshop for muddying it up enough to make it look good!

    Force Fins

I expect disagreement with my take on Force Fins but, for me anyhow, they simply tear up my knee's. Sure they are efficent and have tons of power, but I like being able to walk after floating. On the up-stroke I think their efficiency is what hobbles me. My use for fins is mainly lakes and ponds just to hold position against a breeze or to slowly work a shore. I also use them on SOME rivers I know to be of mild current and relatively snag-free. Again, this is just MY take, your usage may, and probably will, vary!

    Stuck Ferrules

If you had both hands on one section, and your partner had both hands on the other section I can see that happening. As they say on ER, sorry for your loss!

    digital

Let me be first to suggest the Pentax WR-33. Small, light, GREAT macro (down to 1 cm) and... most importantly, water resistant. It has no motor driven doors to break and wear out batteries, the lens is fixed and flat against the body, it is as simple as 'point 'n shoot' to as complex as you need and it has been upgraded twice, thus making it far cheaper than a year ago when I bought mine. Of the 3 friends of mine who have bought them I haven't heard one single complaint... Hatchbomb?

    Stuck Ferrules

If the knee trick fails and there is no ice around, nother safe bet is to have two people grab the rod in the same way as if you were taking it apart on your own... the power of two people makes it amazingly simple.
  17. Oh man Chris... have you seen that Swimmy Jimmy in the water? I did a float with a few friends a week ago down the Tuckaseegee. These guys laughed at my 'bass bug'. The swimming action on that fly tore the trout UP! When Kelly told us, 'it'll work on ANY fish' I can see why. Heck, Harvey almost dove in the water to eat it!

    Bobbin tweak

Yeah, Daryn. Bend the legs slightly so the centerline of the spool is off-set enough to make a straightline path of the thread from the spool to the bobbin tube. You're trying to avoid having the thread rub on the top (spool end) of the bobbin tube.
  19. Go barefoot! Don't laugh... it helps!
  20. We made that exact trip several years ago. One place to look up is Lopstick Lodge in New Hamshire. Who woulda thunk that New Hampshire gave me some of the fondest memories of fly fishing ever? Besides overlooking a great lake, the river connecting the lake to others has good amounts of land-locked salmon. The highlight (besides the big, well equipped ranch home we rented for a song) was catching brookies on top each day on small ponds in the National forests. The owner of Lobstick has rowboats at several good locations in the forests. Brookies on top, in August no less chomping on small Adams... what's better than that? While in Maine you gotta try for stripers in the surf. Just be mindful of a 14' tide drop! If your lucky the McDonalds out there might have lobster rolls on the menu! It's a seasonal thing but kind of cool. If your going with non-fishers the shops in Freeport Maine are incredible. LL Bean Headquarters is there as are a lot of other manufacturers outlets (many of which you won't find at the Birch Run clone malls) and the deals are unbelievable. Put on the dark sunglasses and make a stop in Montreal. The babes walking the streets are worth it! I envy you!

    Wrapping lead

Nice tip, Shoe! I'll try it tonight.

    Bobbin tweak

Can't recall where I got this from but bending the legs on your bobbin to get a more straight-line path from the thread to the tube sure seems to eliminate a lot of wear and tear on the bobbin as well as help prevent break offs.

  24. QUOTE (cornmuse @ Dec 29 2004, 01:38 PM) Pontoon boats seem neat, I've not fished from one. When I've fished with others it does seem that they lack a bit of efficiency on the water. A 1/2 mile paddle in a pontoon boat seemed to be a lot more work than the same distance in my canoe. Your experiences? Joe C. Sold my Mad River Kevlar Explorer several years ago and never looked back. I went with a 'toon for several reasons; #1 being control while fly fishing. I never have to put the fly rod down to gain or hold position, even in a breeze or mild current. The fins do the work. 'Toons also very rarely tip in the waters I fish. I am good at tipping a canoe, even in a farm pond! All my gear is stashed in zipped bags right at my side, my rods are held in a rod/reel case and a pivoting rod holder mounted to the frame, it takes up very little room when disassembled (can stash the whole thing in the back of my Jeep and still have room for other stuff) and it has a neat, easy-to-use anchor system. If I fished cat III or IV waters or the salt with creatures that bite back I would want the protection of wrapping my arse in fiberglass The downside is the speed. 'Toons aren't the swiftest creatures on the water but they are a lot quicker than wading!
