  1. Candy! If candy were flies I wouldn't have to tie another 'till my teeth fell out! Reckon the girls in the house thought I wasn't sweet enough! Across the street in the neighbors garage I saw a big 'ol Craftman rolling tool chest I just KNEW my bride was keeping there until the big day. I'm still waiting for the big day! I did have a 6' 6" bamboo rod delivered from a friend to try... so fresh that the varnish is still tacky. I'm really getting fond of that little wand and now need to figure a way to make it a present! I got yet another Dremel accesory kit and some cologne which I'll have to swap for somethings more useful, like fly lines! Other than that it was a fine Christmas but I missed my Michigan family sorely!
  2. Robert Traver aka John Voelker. If you like Geirach you might just like Traver. Same style but 30 years earlier... and his tin cups are NOT full of coffee! What a story teller!
  3. I had my regular vise packed up for a trip tomorrow and decided to yank out the old Griffin and tie a fly or two. Wow, that was no fun! Though I don't do a lot of twirling and spinning with a true rotary, it is amazing how many times I wanted to tweak the position of the fly I was tying and couldn't. Say what you will, I ain't NEVER going back to a non-rotary.
  4. QUOTE (TroutBum @ Dec 12 2004, 12:07 PM) I think you'd be safer if you just went out and got some surgical scissors. I've found some in a local flea market, the ones that opthamologists use for eye surgery are the best. I like THAT idea! Thanks!!! I'll have to add that to the dubbing picks (little barbed reamers) and thread threaders I got from my Dentist.
  5. I use 'Ice' and Dr. Slick fine point scissors for some cutting. They ain't fine enough so I was wondering, would taking a file to the outside edges of the tips ruin the scissors? I would avoid the cutting edges and only take some of the edge off of the outside area of the tips. What do you think? Has anyone tried this?
  6. If you fish you just have to look up the Pentax WR-33 and it's newest model. The 'WR' stands for water resistant. It's made for the fly fisher... super macro's, very small and light, point 'n shoot or as complex as you want and... it's a Pentax! That's all they make, optical stuff, and they are darn good at it. There are no hinged flashes to break or any parts sticking out, it's just a smooth, clean design. There is no down-side to the WR series that I know of, unless you MUST buy from a 'big box' store and unless you are blowing your pictures up to poster size. A search on almost any fly fishing site will tell all.
  7. I see you too drank of the Kool-Aid! It's a sickness I tell you! The little 8', 4 wt. IM-6 Winnie TMF is an all time favorite of mine. Any rod that makes you smile every time, and the whole time you use it can't be beat! Enjoy!!!

QUOTE (Graham @ Dec 6 2004, 06:09 PM) Is it ok if I let my Avatar open her robe for a quick flash? Sure Graham. We all appreciate fine art here!
  9. Thanks Will! Glad I was given the opportunity to order from you! Jack
  10. Right you are, Steelheader69, though not at all unusable, the hardware store stuff is about .0007" thicker than the salt water Flashabou. By feel though it isn't at all that much different. It does make SWEET Pearl Necklaces though. Got the gold there too! This is more limber than the opal Flashabou.
  11. At Lowes hardware store I found this big bundle of Flashabou for $1.99! The little bundle costs $4.99. I'm a smart shopper!
  12. QUOTE (Shoe @ Dec 3 2004, 10:41 PM) I'm lookin' Always have... I just can't duplicate my lifestyle at a reduced income. If my wife and I could score 2/3 of our income down there, I'd be gone tomorrow. Working on it.... Shoe, the cost of living! Do a search on comparative costs between locations and you might be suprised! Really! Plus, I know a spot that could use your skills that is in about the same type of 'hood you're in now. and yes, they DO wear shoes down here! You DO work on NASCAR driving shoes... dontcha?
  13. Another neat trick is to move down South!
  14. Jeff Beck Al Dimeola assorted others to be continued...
  15. Aim high and keep your expectations low! I asked for a Winston 8 1/2', 4 weight Boron IIx. My 6 weight needs company! I also asked for a 20-23' center consol Jones Bros. THAT ain't gonna happen but the BIIx looks small in comparison!
  16. I didn't have a problem with the two vises I had with screws until I got the cam jaws for one of them. Ain't no turning back now! You still have to tweak a screw for big leaps in size with a Renzetti cam jaw, but it is oh-so easy now! Besides, it is way cool the way the fly falls in your hand when you release the cam! It's funny, I can see the stuck-in-his-ways 'old fart' in me trying to get out but with too-many-piece rods and cam jaws I admit there are improvements that do indeed make sense.
  17. It ain't so bad. I did the same thing 3 years ago when I moved from Michigan. A few things you should enjoy, other than the mostly friendly people and sweet tea, are the views when you're fishing. I'm not sure where you're from but Michigan waters are nothing like these. The mountains and pocket waters will blow you away. They stock heavily during the year so the chances of nabbing some HUGE brook trout and others are very good. There are a lot of good rivers with hold-over fish that get some size to them too. The tailwaters also get some natural reproduction that offer good times. If you aren't spoiled rotten on big fish the mountain native brookies are almost worth the move. Certainly the scenery is. We do outings and float for smallies in the tailwaters once or twice a year. The latest thing is targeting, believe this or not, musky in those tailwaters. A few friends have had great success once they stopped throwing smallie-sized bugs. The ocean isn't as close as you think but the 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 hour drive is worth it. If you have family there is plenty for them to do there while your wondering what the heck kind of fish you just caught. It only hurts when people start talking about pike and musky season, salmon and steelhead season and predictable, set-your-watch by them hatches. There is an extraordinary number of fly flingers around here and they are just as gung-ho as any I've met anywhere. I'm pretty sure you'll like it. There are many other 'danged Yankee's' who have moved down here lately so you won't have total culture shock, especially when one of them cuts you off while giving you the bird! It'll feel just like home! The school system in Mecklinberg County absolutely SUCKS! It's one big social 'feel good' experiment that isn't working. Taxes are high in Mecklinberg too but once you see how much house you get for the northern dollar (I'm assuming you're from the north!) you will keep a grin on your face. Best of luck and drop me a line when you get settled in.
  18. That is a fly to be proud of!

  21. Two that I've spent a ton of time on are the Manistee and the Ausable. The Manistee will always be considered my home water though, even if the 'flippin company moved me 750 miles away from it! Home based out of a cabin just upstream of CCC Bridge. Anyone who knows the area knows I could have done much worse! Here where I moved the larger rivers change daily and sometimes hourly. There's just no getting use to the power companies having control of the flow. Thank goodness for way too many small, mountain streams! There are so many places down here to fish each new one becomes a favorite. Here's a taste:
