  1. I'm fishing Sava Bohinjka next week Here are some more flies i'll be taking all ties on 8/0s David I would think Skagit would be a poor choice since you are targeting specific areas and sight fishing... not swinging through a run (but i am all bias against OH casting and stripping 2handers) I'll have 8wt and 10wt... each with Float, Int, and sink Rio Outbound lines
  2. The Partridge Predator series of hooks is also worth looking into they are a bit more expensive, but a better hook Don't know what species you are targeting.... but be mindful that the B10s hook will bend
  3. longer rod does not = longer distance Trying to OH a 2hander/switch is not accurate and not a magic bullet technique and practice with the correct pairing of line to rod is what you should be looking into... not a longer rod I really cringe when i hear people talking about switch/2handed rods for applications that are suited for single handers
  4. you're standing on a ladder in still water stripping flies, correct? i really don't think you want a "spey rod" and "spey line" - you'll be Overhead casting... not spey casting - make sure you are approaching all aspects (rod building and line)as an overhead rod NOT as a "spey rod"... complete different - spey lines (skagit and scandi shooting heads) are made to be spey cast... not over head cast... and are the exact opposite in taper and design There are 2handed rods and lines build for overhead,,, Beulah and TFO are two companies making them the motion of casting in this style is not going to be fun on a ladder, since you are doing more rocking and using your body if you get a "spey setup" you are just going to be frustrated and give it up why do you want a 2handed rod? just for the novelty and gimmick? personally, i'd stick with a single hand rod, 20-30' of T-whatever, and some mono running line you should be able to cast that damn far
  5. thanks guys bob- i like the tarpon snake I will be fishing northern Slovenia I have dozens of pike/musky/warmwater/ larger trout streamers ranging from 6-13inches (10cm is the min fly length allowed) looking for some info on... Flash or no flash? Weighted fly or unweighted? jig style or body weight? push water for a lateral line hunter or movement for visual? constant strip or strip pause, and the need for a fly to "buck" on the pause? Singles? doubles? triples? I've heard red/white and all tan are good colors the very limited info i've seen are flies have been basically zonker strips tied to a hook… looking for a bit more than that some of the flies already in my box
  6. Huchen is a close relative, european cousin, to a taimen largest resident river salmonidae.... nothing really like lake trout and walleye large aggressive predators...but unlike Taimen, they are a bit smaller and not keying on surface flies since you can only target them in winter due to local regulations, aliens have to have a guide (locals have to fish in pairs). it also appears that a "guide" is not like what we have in the US...and most (if not all are throwing gear) not much info on fly fishing for them... esp in English so I was looking for someone with first hand experience...
  7. I know its a long shot... anyone have any experience with flies for Huchen?

  9. Brian (owner of CCG) has had the flu for the past week+ and i'm pretty sure Matt (who does the social media and blog) is on the road but yes, some of the product is designed to remain tacky, since it allows you to add more material. a quick brush of sally hansens kills the tackiness ALL OF WHICH IS ON THEIR WEBSITE http://clearcuregoo.com/page1/page4/page4.html "The Clear Cure Flexible- cures with a slight tacky feel to it. You can remove this by applying hand sanitizer ( 62% alcohol ) to it which will create a matte finish OR- you can apply a small layer of head cement or lacquer to it. I typically thin down my head cement to the tune of 2/3 head cement to 1/3 acetone. If you are wondering if the head cement will make the Flexible, less flexible. It wont. It bonds beautifully to the Clear Cure Goo material and it will still be plenty flexible."
  10. the "line wt" conversation is all relative you have to think that there is a recommended grain wt window for each blank... so it is not exact line manufactures have a certain grain window tolerance for each line... it can be up to 25 grains on identical lines then each line model (taper and head length) line will vary.... a short head vs long taper vs XYZ Some lines (GPX) are even produced to be up to a full line wt heavier than marked then it depends on the fly you are using... throwing a dry fly on 5wt is a lot different than a 6in streamer on a 5wt so its all about finding a good match for your casting style, style of fishing, and rod the line wt designation is made to help the make it easier.... but it should not be the end all
  11. haha thats great... Uncle ken has all the makings of a true Facebook/forum fly tying superstar!
  12. thanks yeah, they are just under a foot
  13. bob makes a good point in not trying to carry too much line essp if you are using an agressive tapered/ shorter head line (which you should be using for larger flies) you will also need to change your casting stroke open your loops and move to a more dynamic cast (ie Belgium style) dont try to keep everything in the same plane like with a 4wt throwing small dries personally... I like 8'6 or 9' rods lines- rio outbound or SA titan taper
  14. The AJ hooks are nice and come in a range of sizes The blue heron hooks are my favorite... but they are only available in large sizes
  15. MFC boat box w/swing leaf OR Large plano boxes Key is letting the materials dry fully before putting them back in with the other flies
  16. Basically the big "musky fly" trend is interchangeable for pike you can downsize what you see as musky, and have super effective pike patterns in my experience, pike aren't that picky... esp when you are throwing topwater Also the poledancer style patterns... here are 2 we just featured http://hatchesmagazine.com/blogs/Hatches/2013/01/30/zaggin-zook-by-curtis-fry/ http://hatchesmagazine.com/blogs/Hatches/2013/01/24/the-ratsquirrel-pole-dancer-by-scott-lewis/ thanks Crotalus. That is one nice fly and it dosnt look to hard to tye. Ill need to get some of that foam though. go to the kids section of your favorite big box store they make interlocking foam squares for floors easy to glue togeather for multicolor and then dremel for shape you will have a lifetime supply for a few$ I also like the foam cylinders that are sold at any fly shop... large size cut in half on an angle and you can make divers or poppers few tips - make sure you coat your foam- its all fairly soft and will easily catch teeth and prevent clean hook ups i like to coat with Clear cure goo - fish your top water with an INT line- your get much better action an "chug" foam cylinder painted and covered with CCG
  17. all the trailers from the fly fishing film tour 2013 http://hatchesmagazine.com/blogs/Hatches/2013/02/07/2013-fly-fishing-film-tour/ the weekly "Hatches Theater" posts (usually 3 videos) http://hatchesmagazine.com/blogs/Hatches/tag/hatches-theater/
  18. you may be looking at the "fishing deeper" issue in the wrong way my opinion --- a sink line is you best bet for fishing deep a floating line is going to keep you in the top 4ft or so of the water column
  19. looks like he just snipped the fly and left his loop knot Welcome Ben
  20. i find it hilarious that people have a chip on their shoulder, thinking everyone is out to rip them off CCG is a business... not a charity... they can choose what prices they please and i find that their price is fair... especially for Made in the USA fly tying specific product... by a small fly fly company. when you factor in shelf-life, easy of use, no-waste, customer service, and the finished product.... it is well worth the $ good/quality products cost more and usually outperform their cheaper counterparts and yes... i'd bet that I have done more "research" than others
