  1. Mine are in the mail. I tied up a second set with the hope that quantity can make up for the questionable quality.
  2. Red I guess... it's a reddish brown color.
  3. Good info - thanks folks! Quick question: if I were to cut this into strip / patches to share with folks on here, what would be a good size patch to create? I was thinking something like 4" square? I'm thinking I could offer to provide the first X number of folks that PM me and send a self addressed envelope a patch - but I need to determine the patch size before figuring out how many patches I could provide! Please don't start PM'ing me with requests yet.. I'll post something if I decide to go ahead with this. Thanks!
  4. I was the recipient of a full kangaroo pelt in the annual yankee swap at my work. Anyone here ever use kangaroo? The hair is long and very soft. Not very straight either. Thinking maybe nymph dubbing - but wondering if anyone else is familiar with the material. The other idea that has occurred to me is to make zonker strips. It's a nicely preserved pelt - clearly meant to be hung on the wall, but not really our style of decor. Almost a shame to cut it up. Any suggested uses would be appreciated!
  5. I'll do it if you'll have me. Thanks.
  6. I opened my wonderful gift from Horshoes this morning! Thanks - great flies, I can't wait to try them out! Merry Christmas!
  7. 7'6" 3 wt, 9' 5 wt, 9' 6wt 3 wt gets the most use as the water nearby is a smaller tailwater with very picky fish that like small dries or nymphs. Considering getting a 10' 4wt for nymphs and a 8/9 wt for salt.
  8. Funny, that is the exact rod my son broke the tip off of.
  9. 1a. Parachute Adams 1b. Tan X2 Caddis (which replaced the Tan Elk Hair Caddis this year.)
  10. My six year old son has expressed similar interests and I've decided this is the year he joins me on the water. I'll be watching this thread with interest! I'm curious - what did you recommend as the ideal starter outfit? Trying to decide is it should be a shorter rod to match his stature or if I go with something like a 8'6" 5wt. I picked up one of those practice rods last year and let him play with it - it was a pretty good tool and I think helped him learn some of the basics. One point though - he ended up breaking it playing with his younger sibling... playing the "giant fish" game described above. This is probably obvious to everyone here, but I learned the hard way to limit access to the tackle to supervised times. The biggest struggle I've had thus far is in teaching him how to manage line so he can actually get a proper hook set. There is always to much slack line after the cast - it's difficult to teach them how to handle getting the right line out (even on the local still water pond.)
  11. MY flies arrived this evening as well. Truly astounding quality and creativity at work in this package. Thank you to each of you for the excellent flies. Not only do I look forward to fishing each one of them but I'm looking forward to incorporating some of the ideas into my own patterns. Spring can't come soon enough (I'll wait until the condition improve to given them a fair chance!)
  12. I have one of these with a clear rubber net. Really like it. Good quality at a decent price crafted by an individual who does it for enjoyment. http://www.stevensnets.com/products.html
  13. I've been struggling to pick a pattern. Hoping to tie something unique but effective. However, all attempts at innovation (or simply copying some of the more unique patterns) has results in flies that are less effective than my favorites. I'm going to stick with what works even if it's a little boring. I'll tie an X2 Caddis and might round it out with some another life stage or two if a have the time.
  14. I second the vote for Tightline - doesn't get better in terms of video quality and I love the clear audio - they record their commentary after making the video rather talking while tying so you don't get the background noises and muffled voices. Also, they always have a clever tip or two with very detailed descriptions that make me a better tier.
  15. I'm using the Mastery Textured in a 3 wt these days. Still makes some noise when casting, but not as bad as the Sharkskin (or so I've heard since I don't have a Sharkskin line.) It'll give you some finger wear, but it isn't terrible. That being said, I don't love the line. First, I think it gets dirtier than a smooth line (which offsets the advantages when shooting line.) Second, I've had real trouble with the tip sinking - much more so than the Orvis line it replaced.
  16. Rubber worms?!? Looks like I'll have to wait... if I tired to cast one of those things, I'm sure I'd have an awful "wind" knot.
  17. Flies are on their way. I'm excited for someone to get this - can't believe we have to wait until Christmas!
  18. Hi BFR, I sent you a PM requesting the address. I'm following up here - can you send me your address? Flies are ready to go!
  19. The only bummer with getting one of your own back is that you can't help but compare them to the high quality flies in the box! A good lesson in humility for me.
  20. Size 14 Adams Parachute - small 4 inch brook trout on the Ellis river in Jackson, NH. I can still remember the bright blue spots. My friend who introduced my caught around 20 fish including a few big ones. All I got was the little brookie and I couldn't have been happier. For the longest time, I couldn't catch anything except on dry flies since I couldn't figure out when to set the hook. Small stream dry fly fishing is a great place to start - you don't need to cast very far at all and those little brook trout like big dry flies!
  21. Wow, great flies folks. Thanks for the hard work. I'm blown away by the quality!
  22. Glad they got there! Looking forward to seeing everyone's twist on an old favorite!
