  1. Skip Morris does say in that book to use No. 2 lead for hook sizes 14 and larger and No. 1 lead for hook sizes 16 and smaller. He also writes about fine, medium, and thick lead wire but doesn't define his terms. I'll just use .025" lead and not worry about it any more. BUT if someone, like ScienceGuy141, does run across something on this I would appreciate it if they would share please. IMHO, flytire's chart is the best solution. Thanks.
  2. ScienceGuy141, Yep, that's where I saw flytire's information before I began this thread and that's the book I'm using. Thanks for trying. If I don't see another answer soon I'll use .025" lead wire since I'm going to tie on a #10 hook. That should work great! But for the future if I see that referenced in old books I'd still like to know although it may not be consistent across manufacturers.
  3. Yes, I have searched online and haven't found an answer. I found copies of your chart posted before I asked my question and it doesn't show lead wire No. 1 is equivalent to .0xx" wire diameter, lead wire No. 2 is equivalent to .0yy" wire diameter. When I found your chart I copied and pasted it into my reference file because it's great information and would be more universally helpful in the future. If I can't find an answer I'll use your chart. I like it better anyway. Are lead wire size numbers (e.g., No. 1, No. 2, etc.) obsolete? I assume I'll run into them some more when I look at old books with fly patterns so the conversion would be handy.
  4. I have .015 lead wire and patterns calling for No. 1 and No. 2 lead wire. I see lead wire being sold by the diameter. What is No. 1 equivalent to? What is No. 2 equivalent to? Are there other No. sizes? Thanks, Dan
  5. Plus sliced onion? Oops! My bad. That's for a mayonnaise, banana, and onion sandwich.
  6. SWMBO was almost ready to kill me the way it was. This would have caused my death!
  7. It just arrived and it's beautiful. The Thompson bobbin wasn't mentioned in the listing so I didn't know if it was included but it was. I like the dark no-glare vise a bit better and I've heard they're easier on the eyes during a long tying session. Both are in very, very nice condition. Have any of you used the Thompson bobbin? Opinion? Earlier I said, "Do they call it VAD (Vise Acquisition Disorder)? Is there a 12 step program for it or does it require an intervention? I probably need to get prepared." I'm up to 4 vises now with 3 of them being Thompsons.
  8. I specifically asked my surgeon yesterday about paddling a kayak or rowing a jon boat. He basically said go for it. "Live your life." My back issue wasn't due to any accident or overuse but due to degeneration caused by arthritis. I'll probably have more issues like this in the future in other parts of my spine but they won't be due to any activities. That said, I'm leaning away from getting a kayak after all the comments here. (Thanks for the input guys!) I'm thinking I'll figure out a good way to transport my 14' aluminum jon boat instead. I have experience using the jon boat so I know it's comfortable, stable, and has plenty of room for me and my gear. Using a couple of oars I can scoot around a lake or a pond almost effortlessly and get back into the shallow areas. But it's quite a bit heavier than a kayak and would be too difficult to cartop by myself but I could slide it on a trailer and strap it down. If I use the jon boat I'll start making a few modifications to it. It needs a rod holder and a fish locator. Thanks again guys! Dan
  9. 👍 Thanks! Good idea.
  10. "New canoe"? Haven't heard of those. That looks pretty cool. Where did you get it if you don't mind saying. Some of the Ascend kayaks remind me of a pirogue ... sort of. They're supposed to be very stable for a kayak. Update: I think I found them. Frontier NuCanoe?
  11. If you fish from a kayak tell me the pros and cons please. I have mobility issues so I need to be seated while fly fishing. I've done it from a jon boat years ago but I suspect it's different when fishing from a kayak. A kayak would be easier to transport I think; like on a car top.
  12. My restrictions have been lifted. The surgeon said he has only had a few people who have so little or no pain. I told my wife that the surgeon said I need to keep active so he wrote me a prescription for a kayak. I don't think she believes me. She knows me too well.
  13. Good information! Thanks Poopdeck.
  14. Geez Louise!!! I had no idea. These commercially made systems I've seen now look like a waste of time to duplicate. Thanks for enlightening (shocking?) me.
  15. I'm going to start rigging up a little fly tying station. One part will be for holding spools of threads, lead wire, no-lead wire, tinsel, etc. How many spools should I plan for? I know the numbers are going to vary wildly but I need to start somewhere. Thanks!
  16. Here's one example: "Thunder Creek Salt Mackerel after seeing the heads Norm made with UV I can never go back to lacquer, or Sally's."
  17. Just a guess but are those references to Sally's fingernail polish?

Congratulations! I still remember the weekly family grocery shopping trip on the weekends when mom and dad would each get their carton of cigarettes for $2.50 each (that averaged $0.25 a pack). As a little kid I was appalled that they would spend $5 a week on cigarettes as poor as we were with 3 kids in the family. Years later they finally quit.
  19. Bear Kodiak 55#, 63# at my draw. Bought it about 35 years ago. I shoot instinctively.
  20. The box for the vise was in another photo and looked nearly perfect. I'll know more when they arrive.
  21. The doctors can't understand why I've not been in pain from the condition my back was in but for once in my life I'm one lucky son-of-a-gun!
  22. This kid did a great job! Best one I've seen on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tC-iCenyaoU
