Tying Flies with... Trash

Recommended Posts

So I have been in Brooklyn this week visiting my daughter, and I ran across an interesting modern art exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum.... David Riley, a Brooklyn artist, has an exhibit of flies he ties using beachcombed trash, and a how-to video of him making them. Apparently a lot of plastic tampon applicators wash up on shore here, (yes that's tampon not tarpon) and the video shows and explains how Mr Riley fashions them into flies and uses them to catch fish here.

Here's a link to the exhibit

He also makes scrimshaw out of old plastic trash. Hundreds of lures and scrimshaws, other trash art too... I really did enjoy the exhibit.

Anyway, I tried to find the video on the web to post it here, but couldn't find even a short clip of it. It's called, "Welcome Back to Wasteland Fishing." It's worth a look if you get a chance to see it.
