Guest Report post Posted May 8, 2006 For official rules and details visit: http://www.flytyingforum.com/contest I am VERY excited to announce the 2006 Fly Tyer of the Year Contest! I know this is somewhat early but this year I wanted to announce the details of the FTOTY contest as soon as possible so I can get out there and promote the event hoping to get us some good publicity. For the most part the format is the same as in years past. Because we had a smaller turnout last year I did modify the category structure. We had alot of categories with just a couple of flies and one category only had a single fly. What I did was I condensed several of the species into one category but I am allowing each member to submit more than one fly into that category that are different styles. For example, last year we had Smallmouth Bass - Topwater Smallmouth Bass - Streamer This year we only have one Smallmouth Bass category but you will be able to submit both a topwater and a streamer fly into that category. In essence, there are less categories this year but I designed so you can still submit the same amount of flies as last year. Because of the feedback that I got last year I am asking that everyone submits their flies into the appropriate categories. This year I will take the initiative to move flies into another category if I feel that is the best fit. Please contact me if you are unsure of what category your fly belongs into. Like last year, each of the 19 category winners will move onto the 2nd round of voting that will determine the 2006 Fly Tyer of the Year. Because of the condensed categories I will announce the top three spots in each category instead of just the winners in years past. I "believe" that I have secured a prize for each of the top three spots in each category and that is what the t-shirt money will be going toward. I dont want to announce anything until that is official so stay tuned..... This year we also have two new categories to go along with the newest forum we have here on FTF; a classic streamer and classic wet fly category! From what I have seen the tyers who contribute to that forum can tie some amazing stuff so I hope I can motivate them to submit a fly into the contest for everyone to see and vote on. You have from now until December 31st to get your flies done and mailed out so start thinking about what flies your gonna spin up this year. Seriously, I want everyone to feel invited to enter. This is not a contest only for the elite, this contest is all about challenging yourself to tie the best fly that you possibly can. Win or lose I think everyone who enters comes out of the event feeling like they are a better tyer because they took the time to tie their flies to the best of their abilities. Learn a new pattern or technique and do what you can to master that technique. Nobody is going to look down upon you nomatter what fly you submit, so do the best fly that you can and I hope to see everyone take part in this annual FTF tradition this year. Best of luck to everyone, I hope you all have alot of fun tying your flies this year and I anticipate the day that I start seeing them coming in. If you have any questions or comments about the contest please PM me or send me an email to [email protected] I am excited to announce that for the first year in a row Chris Carlin will be building a custom bamboo fly rod that will be given to the overall winner of the 2006 FTOTY contest. Chris is one of the admins of the Rod Building Forum(one of FTF's sisters sites) and the owner of Far North Rodsmiths. Like the past two years Chris will be making the the building process interactive by introducing a series of polls that will allow everyone to vote for various aspects of the rod; length, thread color, weight, etc. In addition Chris will be photographing and explaining the build process over on RBF so that we can all follow along while he constructs this year's grand prize. I cannot explain how much I appreciate what Chris has done to help make the FTOTY contest what it is. He has gone the extra mile to donate his time and material and I thank him for that! Prizes All Category Winners Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded to to the top 3 flies in each of the 19 categories http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=19802 J.Stockard Gift Certificates J.Stockard will be giving a $10 gift certificate to each participant and even more to the category winners! http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=20248 Canadian Fly Fisher Magazine Each of the 19 category winners will receive a Jim Teeny Fly Line. 2nd Place Overall Winner will receive a Marryat MX Plus 10-13wt fly reel($1000 value). 3rd Place overall winner will receive a $250 William Joseph Gift Certificate http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=20274 Trout Prize Custom Fly Rod built by Steeldrifter http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=17072 Rookie of the Year Prizes Rotary Tying Station from Al and Gretchen Beatty http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=19803 Saltwater Grand Prize Cabelas Fly Box System http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=18008 Most Realistic Prize Miranda's Machine Works Fly Box http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=18919 Panfish Prize Miranda's Machine Works Fly Box http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=18918 Most Creative Prize Miranda's Machine Works Fly Box http://www.flytyingforum.com/index.php?showtopic=18920

Guest Report post Posted May 8, 2006 This mean only 1 realistic looking pattern can be entered and it would be under realistics? I have a hard time tying something for a contest that's not out of the norm. Having this question answered will keep my ears from itching and a heads up on what can be tied. Start them enterys early Homeboys! Brent
Guest Report post Posted May 8, 2006 Brent, The only real problem that I know of is when somebody submitted a fly into the dry fly category when it wouldn't actually float. When people brought this up I made a case for flies like yours that were "realistic" but could indeed be fished in the same way as all the other flies in that category. Basically what I will be looking for is a fly that cannot be fished in a way appropriate for the category. I can only think of a couple from the past years that I would move, and yours are not included on that list.

steelie 0 Report post Posted May 9, 2006 Goood Day, I have been experimenting in the "fly lab" already... boo ha ha ha... I like the changes too... Perhaps, for the 2007 competition, depending on so many variables, we could split the realistics into "fishable" and "art flies"? Steelie
