loneranger88 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 I am interested in flyfishing/tying and am writing a paper on flyfishing culture and flyfishers. Please respond to some questions if you feel so inclined. Thank you so much and may you catch a giant brown trout! 1. What/who led you to begin flyfishing? When was this? 2. When did you first consider yourself a fisherman? What led to this? 3. Where are some favorite places you have fished? Why? 4. What was your reaction to the book/movie A River Runs Through It? What affect did its release have on flyfishing in the United States? 5. What do you wear when flyfishing? How many flies do you usually take with you? Do you tie them yourself? 6. What is your view on bass fishing? 7. How is territory marked in flyfishing? What is proper etiquette when running into another fisher on the water? 8. What are some characteristics of an "authentic" flyfisher in your view? 9. The sport is very male-dominated. Why do you think this is? Is there a place for women in the world of flyfishing? What should women do to become more prominent in the sport? 10. Do you fish stocked streams? Do you eat the fish that you catch? Why/why not? 11. Do you often fish with others, or alone? 12. Do you consider flyfishing a spiritual experience? 13. Please describe your best flyfishing experience. 14. What characterizes a novice flyfisherman? 15. How is equipment/technique used as a means of expression/status among flyfishers?

flytyingscotsman 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2007 I'm ashamed at the response to these questions, so to set a good example, here goes :- 1. What/who led you to begin flyfishing? When was this? I wanted to be like smalliehunter and steeldrifter 2. When did you first consider yourself a fisherman? What led to this? I made a mis-click with my mouse and found myself on this forum 3. Where are some favorite places you have fished? Why? No good fisherman reveals these kinds of secrets - the directions to the secret hole will follow me to the grave 4. What was your reaction to the book/movie A River Runs Through It? What affect did its release have on flyfishing in the United States? Shadowcasting has developed in leaps and bounds since this movie was released 5. What do you wear when flyfishing? How many flies do you usually take with you? Do you tie them yourself? Nothing. The flies usually show up when I get there, especially if it's hot 6. What is your view on bass fishing? Do I need a view on bass fishing ? 7. How is territory marked in flyfishing? What is proper etiquette when running into another fisher on the water? My dog tried to mark the territory, but the river kept washing away the scent There are seldom any others - could be my attire - see answer to Q5 8. What are some characteristics of an "authentic" flyfisher in your view? Those prescribing to this forum 9. The sport is very male-dominated. Why do you think this is? Is there a place for women in the world of flyfishing? What should women do to become more prominent in the sport? I think my attire (see answer to Q5) could be a problem here again. To get women involved they should make fly shops more like clothing boutiques (oh, wait, they already tried that). Maybe if they adopted my dress code they would become more prominent 10. Do you fish stocked streams? Do you eat the fish that you catch? Why/why not? If I could eat all the fish I catch I'd be able to win Nathan's Coney Island Hot Dog eating contest 11. Do you often fish with others, or alone? I think the answer to Q5 squares this away 12. Do you consider flyfishing a spiritual experience? Almost as spiritual as a viewing of 'A River Runs Through It' 13. Please describe your best flyfishing experience. Catching the biggest fish I ever caught 14. What characterizes a novice flyfisherman? Someone asking questions such as those in this list 15. How is equipment/technique used as a means of expression/status among flyfishers? I'm not prepared to answer questions concerning body part envy (could this be my on-stream dress code AGAIN ?)
