Arkansas Mike 0 Report post Posted August 23, 2009 I have an entirely new level of respect for you, Salty. Your Wulffs are... well, perfect, Sir. They came in over the weekend. And thanks a ton for the extras! I want you in all of my swaps! I dig the way you tag your flies. Mike
the saltydog 0 Report post Posted August 23, 2009 Thanks, I'm glad you appreciate them. I really enjoyed tying them, its been a while since I tied some classics and it was a great theme for a swap. In regards to toe tagging, it was the only thing I could think to do with the colors of adhesive foam that come in the big pack that I would never use to tie flies.... even if there was a pattern that called for mauve sticky foam, I couldn't bring myself to tie it or be seen in public with that... the 80's are well behind us thank goodness. rich5665 0 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 Mike, If I can't locate some black hackle, I may do the gnats in brown or olive.
the saltydog 0 Report post Posted August 26, 2009 Mike, If I can't locate some black hackle, I may do the gnats in brown or olive. If you PM me your addy I could drop some black hackles in the mail to you, let me know size and how many.
Arkansas Mike 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2009 Mike, If I can't locate some black hackle, I may do the gnats in brown or olive. If you PM me your addy I could drop some black hackles in the mail to you, let me know size and how many. I'm easy, Rich. Whatever works best for you. I could send you some black hackle, but all I have in black at the moment is Metz saddle, and I'm not too sure I have any smaller sizes. I bet Salty has some better quality... But, like I say, if you want to go with brown or olive...it's all good. Mike
atroutbum2 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2009 Mike, If I can't locate some black hackle, I may do the gnats in brown or olive. the trick to swaps is to alter the pattern to fit what materials you have on hand, then you just call it a "variant"
Arkansas Mike 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2009 Hey, atroutbum2. So...if I tie a Muddler, and it comes out looking nothing like a Muddler...can I just lie and tell everyone it's a Muddler Variant? Sweet. Mike
atroutbum2 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2009 Hey, atroutbum2. So...if I tie a Muddler, and it comes out looking nothing like a Muddler...can I just lie and tell everyone it's a Muddler Variant? Sweet. Mike Yep I once read an article somewhere that with all the various interchangable materials, there are about 1300 correct ways to tie an adams dry fly, i think my variant tied for this swap makes it 1301
rich5665 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2009 Found the Hackle in a Sports Shop yesterday. Went there on a whim and spent more money than I was intending to :hyst: Came home with the Hackle, some streamer hooks, flash, chenille, thread and chain beads. Almost bought a 9" 9wt and an Orvis reel.
Arkansas Mike 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2009 Almost bought a 9" 9wt and an Orvis reel. So, Rich...what stopped you? $$$? Wife? I try to avoid going into Fly Shops if at all possible for that very reason. It's like going to Wal-Mart... I always spend 5 times more than I intended.
