I'd tell all my students to assume everyone (drivers and animals) around them were complete idiots, and liable to do something stupid. Being from, and having spent lots of time in Northern Michigan, I've scared myself and quite a few deer. Glad you're OK, could have turned out much worse if you wren't paying attention.
