smallieFanatic 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 The Renzetti Apprentice is the only Renzetti under the $100 mark, never tied on it but looks like a pretty good vise, only those jaws look pretty small for bass flies http://cgi.ebay.com/Renzetti-Apprentice-Vi...=item1c0dce9a43 Some reviews for the before mentioned vises: http://www.flyfishohio.com/renzetti_apprentise.htm http://www.flyfishohio.com/Vise%20Review%2...l_apex_vise.htm http://www.flyfishohio.com/Vise%20Review%2...ica_danvise.htm I still recomend the Apex... kyflytyer 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 No one has mentioned Griffin yet, so here goes. They make several vises under the $100 mark, all made in the US. One in particular, the Odyssey Spider Vise, looks like it would suit your needs. I haven't tied on this particular vise, but I have a Griffin Montana Mongoose and the hook holding is second to none. http://anglersworkshop.com/items.aspx?catid=1672
Arkansas Mike 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2009 gee Mike thanks for the publisity and for now you can call me 720 -- to all there isn't a damm thing wrong with having pride in what you use. I'm with Kevan on this one. Nothing wrong with loving your brand vise. It'd be a boring world if we all loved exactly the same things. I personally don't think what vise you use matters that much. John McCoy learned to tie using vise grips and a bent straw for a bobbin. There are some who can tie magnificent display quality flies on a $25 vise (or, no vise at all). If I went out and bought myself a Law, I'm betting my flies would still be less than perfect. I believe skill, practice and technique far outweighs the importance of the name and price tag on your vise. Still, vises are cool and fun to discuss. Bruce Derington 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2009 Do your homework and if you tie mostly big stuff, get a vise that is capable of holding the big hooks. Most mfg. state what size they hold. Next , if you get a pedestal make sure its heavy enough , I seen many vises that hold a hook but when you pull (and you will pull down hard for bugs) the vise tips forward, such is so with the pedestal version Renzetti travelers and many other pedestal models. I prefer c clamps. Its tough to get a good Bass Bug / salt water vise for $100 TO $200 .
sniksoh 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2009 i have a 6 pound pedestal and it has worked fine. its rediculously heavy haha. it will adapt to any vise shaft so im not worrid about the base. i like how the apex has the machined grooves in the jaws. i really have my eye on that one. spending over a hundred dollars on a vise is over budget for me...anything is better then what im tying on now. its a sunrise vice i got off ebay for 12 bucks...it sucks.
