May Flies From the Vise

Recommended Posts

Years ago when the wife had her managery I managed a few Domineckers (Grizzly) for the big brown eggs.  Had a peacock that ran the neighborhood but got run over.  I got his skin.   Outa the business now.   But am watching DD ‘s Wyandottes. They are badger in reverse.   Always foraging feathers/fur living out in the country.

while it may be a spruce fly variation (which has been mentioned) its not a traditional spruce fly

recipes are readily available doing an online search. there is no jungle cock on spruce flies

dark spruce (tied todays style, non splayed) top

dark spruce splayed wings (original) bottom

light spruce (tied todays style, non splayed) top

light spruce splayed wings (original) bottom

instead of doing a copy and paste of the entire article, here is what i wrote on my blog (with a little history)

Badger hackle flies....Got the neck after varmint killed one of daughters roosters.  Feathered streamers need to be tied so the wings don’t fowl in the hook.  Matuka style with ribbing holding them down and the ends behind the hook bend is a good way to do that...

A note here to the young tiers.   It appears youse guys are using huge thread.  Not sure exactly what size it is but a lot smaller tying thread would greatly help the heads of your flies.  Leaving more room at the eye for the finish too.  We here to help.👍

I am working on winged flies. It is still a work in progress. I bought some mallard wings about a week and a half ago specifically so I could master the technique.

Got this furnace badger lil saddle from vicrider, Xmas.  Haven’t used it much.

TSMcD had this wing cutter but can’t find it... Pic is from ole Herters catalog.  Not sure where to get ahold of one today. It had 2 size combs and was aluminum.  Back in my beginnings,60’s, bout all wets had wings, then there came nymphs.😳  my most favorite ParmachenBell.   LeadWingCoachman, WickhamsFancy, BlackGnat, McGinty were others.  Nice to see again.

I think I have run across them somewhere - can't remember where off the top of my head - so there are still some out there.

You got it, once you have the “feel” right on the first three wraps it is really fun to kick these out.  The more you do the easier it will be to set slip a bit more towards the hook eye, resulting in a bit smaller head.  I struggle with the other end of the wings, tending to overshoot the hook bend, you nailed that.👍👍🎣🎣😎😎

Yeah, I was worried about crowding the eye and went too far the other way...

Small stuff, no sweat.  Just great tying for an initial trial...

heres what i learned from tying lessons with don bastian

wing width should be about 2/3 the width of the hook gap/gape

that hook looks to be a little long

tail should be approximately equal the hook shank long

wing should be closer to the hook eye

here are some excellent visual references tied by don bastian

http://hatchesmagazine.com/blogs/Hatches/category/ray-bergman-collection/

notice wing width and length, tail length, wing tie in position etc

Nice ties there, denduke. How often do get a neck like that from you daughter's roosters?  That's really great.

She limits to a dozen chickens.  So not big ongoing supply. The menagery consists of gifted donkey, rescued pony, 4 alpacas, a goat, turkey gobler with white hen....
