  1. my stacking was a little off center...but here it is...the hook shank is lead wrapped so hopefully it kind of suspends in the water column....
  2. Sauger and Walleye are very similar....I have caught walleye using deep clousers....sparkle minnows.....and weighted woolly buggers....sauger specifically, not sure.....good luck
  3. very nice...another winter project for me.....
  4. Bruce those are crazy...I'm assuming that the legs are tied on hooks as well?
  5. very cool my man.....great minds think alike....It looks like you epoxied the bottom of the arms? Have you fished it yet? I haven't used mine...the water is now 45 degrees here....it'll have to wait to spring for me....
  6. thanks all.....I'll put some other divers, sliders, poppers and other spinning madness up soon.....this was my first whack at a frog...I am a deer hair freak....love the stuff.......
  7. I had an eagle claw, 7.5 ft, yellow, 6 wt that could be switched to spin gear with the flipping of the handle.....A $35.00 plastic reel from LLBean....floating wf line, 9 ft 6lb leader.....olive bead head woolly buggar.....terrible cast, flopped it into a fast current, wham...a smallmouth.....been hooked ever since...I actually still have that rod and reel.....I carry it in my trunk in case friends that have never slung bugs before want to give it a try....
  8. well.....my first attempt at a solid deer hair life-like sillhoutte of a frog....needs a little fine tuning....by a little I mean a lot...I know it will catch bucket mouths....but not as pretty as I had in mind.....try try again.....
  9. hey man...welcome...you will learn much here.....I'm upstate NY as well.....
  10. looks like bass will go crazy for it.....i'm gonna tie some of these up.....nice job
  11. the classic guys will have to get over it...hahaha....the fish don't seem to care.....I usually use starling, and paint the dots on, then clear coat them.....but I had those imitations handy....so in they went......
  12. if you used feathers along with the bucktail.....it could be a half and half.....deceivers don't have weighted eyes....that fly will definetly catch smallies though....I use them all the time....
  13. these were for a friend....he gave me a bag of mallard feathers...so I made him these...
  14. It might have something to do with file size....not sure though...
  15. very cool....i need to try that....did you epoxy the hair that surrounds the hook eye?
  16. very nice.....i just got a whole bag of mallard feathers....now...to put them to good use....
  17. This is the first spoon fly I have tried to make....They are usually used to catch redfish, but I thought why not smallies and walleye....has anyone used these in fresh water? so here it is...any pointers on how to make it cleaner would be appreciated....thanks....
  18. I am a stream smallmouth addict.....I use either a 6 or 8 weight, depending on wind conditions.....both 9 foot.....Favorite flies are clouser minoow, size 2-6, with weighted dumbell eyes, I have a pattern I tie, it's on here...Shad Clouser....check it out...it's killer where I fish....Lefty Kreh said, if it ain't chartreuse then it ain't no use...a good searching pattern is a white and chartreuse clouser.....emerald shiners are almost everywhere.....Decievers, divers, bass bugs, wolly buggers in olive and brown work well, they can imitate hellgrammites or crawfish...crayfish pattens dead drifted work great, 55% of a smallmouth's diet is crayfish....in the fall I throw bigger patterns, mainly size 2 and up...before winter they are mainly feeding on baitfish, a slow jerky retreive works well.....nymph patterns also work well dead drifted....Smallmouth like structure.....points, in front of and behind rock piles, they don't like to be directly in the current, they are ambush predators, so cast ahead of where you think the fish is, then strip into it.....they sit along bridge pilings, near fallen trees, anything that will break the current....check current seams, you can look for foam lines, or areas where fallen debris gathers, those are good spots for feeding fish, back eddies, the tail end of riffles.....have fun....fly rodding for smallies is addictive.....
  19. Looked outside today to see a little snow on the ground.....Went to the vise instead....my 12 are finished.....
  20. hey there....I'm fairly new as well...so far this forum is the best I've been on.....welcome
  21. Ok...all of this makes sense.....still, the eyes are tied so the fly rides in the water with the hook point up....it is a straight shank hook as well....and there are feathers involved....more of a half and half.....yes, I used the term clouser, maybe I shouldn't have.....I tie sparsly tied clousers as well, this particular one is tied very thick, it moves a lot in the water, has a big profile and catches a ton of smallmouths and walleyes....especially in the fall....I apologize if my photo led to any confusion...the pattern is in the data base with a photo series showing how I tie it....maybe that will help if I mislead anyone....
  22. I have a 14 foot freedom hawk......so far ....it's amazing....it's a sit on top, so it's naturally a little more stable then a sit in....once the outriggers are deployed it's virtually untippable.....the greatest thing is sight fishing from a yak, I stand up and float down my favorite streams.....I thought I knew my stream until I stood and fished....all that I was missing....amazing....a double haul while sitting down is near impossible.....standing up allows it with ease.....it holds up to 400 lbs....so gear is not a problem....the push pole is great if you want to move without a wake.....the anchor boom with cleat right by the seat makes for simple deployment....the boat is 85 lbs, so it is a little heavy.....the pontoons come off for transport....it came with 2 flush mount rod holders, so I still have to rig up a fly rod holder....the boat doesn't track that well, there is no rudder.....but you get used to it.....a little wind and you do drift pretty easily....so I recommend a drift sock......the boat is expensive brand new....I got a demo, paid half price....but overall, just a little extra rigging, well worth the money....
  23. the eyes are on the top of the hook shank......white and orange deer hair is the bottom of the fly, unless I have been wrong for a long time and a lot of ties, it is the way to tie clousers......
