I believe stippling is the method of placing colored dots to create a different color as well as creating degrees of shading. For shadiing, dots are placed close together for darker shadow areas and further apart for lighter shading. For color, dots of different colors are placed close together and on top of each other to give the impression of another color; for instance, instead of placing orange dots, you would place red and yellow dots. Basically speaking, I think that is stippling. You can check out Stipple's website for example of some of his black and white stippled drawing/renderings.
