  1. 25-30lb mono for me, I fish a lot of clear waters so I like the visibility advantage but can't bring myself to spending $30 for a spool of fluoro.
  2. Don't worry, the royal wulff doesn't call for golden pheasant in the tail anyways. I like to use moose mane but bucktail works well too. To get the hair denser first pull out the shorts and start aligning the fibres from a large clump of hair in your hand, then take a fine toothed comb and brush it through the clump on both ends and gently place it all in a large hair stacker, works every time if you have to use calf tail. Good to hear the pattern is working for you!
  3. Some very generous offers here! I'd offer something up but I'm a one vise kind of guy. Good luck with the hunt!
  4. Bucktail and fox are both excellent choices for steelhead flies, fox would probably be my #1 choice, you can usually find sections of hair for about 3 bucks.
  5. I'm 16 and have been in the sport for about 8 years or so, no one ever really taught me, however I was fishing with a spinning reel by the time I was 4. I'd say that you first have to get people interested in fishing and the outdoors early. Within a year kids get bored of bait and want to move on to lures, once they've had some time with that show them how similar fly fishing is to spin fishing and how much more fun it is to fight fish on a fly rod than a heavy spinning rod. I also find younger kids love playing in rivers, take some benthic samples and let them root around in there for bugs, as long as kids have a good time it doesn't really matter how much fly fishing goes on as long as they can look back and remember what fun it was when they went to the river.
  6. You're looking for it to be about the gape or a little shorter, very important to have a nice fast taper to the feather as well.
  7. Interesting, apart from the Grand and maybe the 'Geen up here I would almost always say the mayflies outnumber the caddis. I can't speak for the far west rivers though.
  8. IMO a 3wt is too heavy for tiny streams. My favourite is the 2wt butterstick, but if you want to use it on bigger rivers the 3wt model is also worth a look.
  9. I'd go with the recommended midges, I've also had some luck with caddis in the 16-18 range and BWO's in the 18-20 range are good as well. I haven't fished the area in question but those are all fairly common bugs so the river should have at least one of them.
  10. Well since you guys all cowered away from it I'll switch to the irresistible wulff.
  11. LOL yes it did, for the first 5 tries at least, then I went back to the books to check on my technique, found a slightly different soft loop style and it worked the first time
  12. Well here it is, lots of mistakes but I'm fairly pleased with it.
  13. Just grabbed this one off of google, been working on one of my own today, body looks alright, in the wing making process now.
  14. What the heck, count me in with a royal wulff.
  15. Well we've decided to go the route of 1/4" eyes and wrapping a good bit of wire on for a little extra weight. Thanks for the tips guys, hopefully next time I'll have a bit time to order stuff in.
  16. I'm looking to tie some sex dungeons for next week but can't find lead eyes in a 3/8" size, I tried going to Galloup's shop but they can't have them to me in time. Does anyone have a source that can ship to Canada within a week? Even better does anyone have a shop in Ontario that has them? If anyone can help out it would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris
  17. It's a pretty cool looking feather, much nicer than the guinea we're used to seeing.
  18. You'll be tying more soon I'm sure! Nice Wulffs!
  19. Christopher K, Nice picture, nice flies and lucky friend. Well it wasn't for free He traded me an old fenwick glass rod for them.
  20. They do still make them, but as far as I know there are no glass models made anymore, sadly.
  21. I agree with Chef on this one, that hook is way to small and will bend very easily by the looks of it, look for something like an octopus hook, they tend to be made with much heavier wire. Apart from that good looking fly!
