  1. Nice fly. I would suggest grizzly hackle tip wings as less bulky- and therefore easier to use- and more true to the original pattern.
  2. Always wanted to fish the Sault. Snowing here this morning, upstate NY.
  3. Speaking of which, did your buddy get my letter yet???
  4. I'm certain I will- and while you (maybe someone else) said that the saddles are not much to write home about, I'm sure I can put the saddle to good use. That is part of the reason I decided on the Grade 3 as well And I don't really need spade hackle- the capes I have now have a good amount left, plus I have woodchuck.(my favorite tailing material of all time) Also moose, caribou, and elk. Though I thanked you already for the capes you sent when I was starting in dry flies, I would like to thank you again, and also Flytire for the beautiful grizzly cape he sent when I posted asking about a cheap source of good grizzly last year. I waited until my skills had progressed a little more to start using that cape- and the feathers are great. And Mogup, I still have the capes you sent too- the black 1/2 cape was so good I can hardly bear to use it. It still has most of its feathers, especially since they're so long I get 2-3 flies out of each. The dun cape is well used, and the brown cape is kaput except for smaller sizes and schlappen, plus some spade hackle.
  5. Wow! Would have gotten a commercial grade, but he has a $40 minimum order, and I wanted head cement, so instead I went for a Grade 3 and two $5 bottles of the head cement- one penetrating, one regular. Probably should have gone for a commercial plus head cement plus spade fibers plus something else.
  6. Great tie! I love Rosborough's flies. The Casual Dress is my favorite.

    Hehe. #5's just hiding.
  8. No, it's just Squatch. @flytire- he's supposed to be on a leash! Did he get out of your yard again???
  9. Yeah. I tied up a couple "keeper" flies with it, but the rest I'm going to keep.
  10. Usually orange possum. I didn't want to waste my original Betters-dyed possum or even just my possum dubbing that's mixed to match it on a fly with the body covered with hackle, so I used cinnamon dubbing with some copper dubbing mixed in. The possum dubbing is strictly for flies that have the body exposed.
  11. Yeah, I meant his $5 spade hackle. Apparently it's enough to tail an entire cape's worth of dry flies. EDIT: 3-5 capes, apparently.
  12. The tailing is woodchuck. I've been thinking about the tailing fibers, I'm not sure how they are packed. Anyone know? Are they on the skin or just feathers in a bag?
  13. They sell bugger hackle too, and hen sets, and you can get a commercial grade grab bag (4 capes, $60) and have one hell of a lot of schlappen, and you can donate the dry fly feathers to a tying class or club..
  14. Yep, and they go all the way down to 000 weight.
  15. Do you think that is a bad thing? I don't really fish much with streamers either. Just started learning how to retrieve streamers this month. I have never caught a fish on a normally fished (retrieved or swung) streamer. I have caught fish on small leeches and any size Woollys, but that was dead drifted. The only flies I liked before were dries, soft hackles and emergers, nymphs, and Woolly Buggers. (in that order)
  16. And you are right, my Dark Spruce Variation was meant to be different. I was just looking through my tying drawers and saying "Ok, what can I add here?"
  17. Thank you for the excellent resources. Nice article(s). (not sure if you are Brk Trt) If that second article is also you, are you the same Brk Trt as on Sparse Grey Matter?

    Three actually! here's another! Nuthatch.
  19. Thought the JC eye was a bit big too, was the smallest one I had and figured I'd use it. I just stuck the bead head on the hook just because, and the JC eye, same deal. Wasn't asking specifically about freshwater streamers- saw your saltwater streamers and thought they were good. Low on dry hooks because I tied up a big batch of dries in trade for a prewar Hardy St. George and the streamer hooks I just never ordered- I got some assorted sample hooks, including a few streamer hooks, from Sierra Fly Hooks when I ordered Simi-Seal from their eBay store. That will be remedied soon- I'm getting a batch of Mustad dry hooks and some streamer hooks too. And Flytire slipped my mind. I agree, his streamers are beautiful. I think I will shoot him a PM asking if he has any tips if he doesn't see this post.
  20. Pat, I know you're a streamer guy. Do you, or anyone else, have tips for my streamer tying? It definitely needs work.

Dunno where to put this... Guess birds are for tying flies, so putting it here. Another bird hit the window. She was OK. I put my hand out; she looked at it, then hopped onto my finger. I transferred her onto my thumb. She was OK with this as well, and just looked at me for a while, then flew to the nearest bush and perched there. This is a female white-throated sparrow.
