  1. Excellent popper. Hook clearance is great and the color/design are excellent. I don't think you'll have problems drumming up bucketmouths with this! J
  2. Bob contributed a wonderful installment of Fly Box Porn to the FFO site featuring flies for this fish . Bob photographed all the flies and they came out superbly! :headbang: Also, every fly has its associated pattern listed. Check it out! Thanks Bob!!!! Fly Fish Ohio Here are a couple teasers: Joe C.
  3. You'll find an in-depth review of the Mongoose on Fly Fish Ohio - just follow the links for the fly tying vise shoot-out. Joe C.
  4. Did you get the information about the new show in Indianapolis next january 5th? I'll forward it when I get home to my other computer. Full table for $100 - tier's table for $50. I don't know much about speakers and other plans, but I'll be there. joe C.
  5. If your curious about all the goings-on in Denver, I've just posted a complete update on the show. Lot's of new gear covered and... surprise, surprise... complete coverage of the politics and business of the show. A different perspective you might say. And you'll like the pics of our own smalliehunter and pujic, too. Check it out here. Joe C.
  6. I just uploaded this one to the coldwater board. Of course, at the end of the day, this is just great as a bluegill and crappie fly. Heads up! You'll want to tie a few of these! Joe C.
  7. You'll like this pattern - certainly there aren't many fish that have seen it If you'd like the step-by-step and downloadable video, just click here Joe C.
  8. A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by cornmuse: The Gimp
  9. You may want to take a look at this selection of flies, too. Its Jerry Goldsmiths line-up for the Indian River flats, but the water there is clear the fish are spooky. You'll find a lot of good patterns that are well proven. Joe C.
  10. I'll be there. I'll be sure to stop by! Joe C.
  11. A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by cornmuse: Puglisi Baitfish
  12. Very cool. I like the "old film" effect and the choice of music. Joe C.
  13. 8 foot six weight glass for smallies for me. It's the perfect Midwest stream size. Specifically I like Browning Silaflex. FYI, I'll be reviewing a new McFarland Rod Co. 8' 6wt Spruce Creek glass on FFOhio in the next few months. For bigmouth I like an 8'6" to 9' 8wt. Medium to slow action, please. For panfish, assuming ideal conditions, I'd opt for a 9' 4wt Scott SAS. Joe C.
  14. They are very easy to tie. I like the blue/black combination for Ohio bronze in March and April. It's just a chenille body, lead eyes, rubber legs and the Kreel super-suade piece. If you purchase one or two of the flies from Kreel as a model you'll find it a very, very easy fly to tie. The Kreel Claws are pretty inexpensive and very durable, too. It's a great pattern. Joe C.
  15. Outstanding! I can't wait for the reports on how the fish like them. Nice color choices. You might want to experiment with rigging these weedless using a bit of plastic "finesse worm" and fishing them with a slow retrieve right along the bottom. Those colors are dead-on for a darter, madtom or small hog sucker. I'm thinking you might have a killer smallmouth fly there!!! :headbang: Joe C.
  16. What's up with this Splashvision guy. Is he going to spam every list and never contribute an honest post?
  17. Grizzly dyed orange or red topped with dark olive and dark brown/black bucktail? I can definitely see that one working out in a big way. :yahoo: Joe C.
  18. The 33903 is a great hook in sizes 10 to 4. I use them for Clousers, too. Just tie the lead dumbells in the kink- instant consistancy and an excellent proportion. I use this hook for cork and foam poppers without problems. IMHO, the biggest challenge is keeping the gape clear and the popper head towards the front half of the hook. So long as you keep at least 50% of the gape open the hook should be fine, though it really needs to be sharpened out of the box. But at <$8 per 100 that seems a fair trade. I've found that many commercial manufacturers who should know better will tend to crowd the gape, so don't feel alone in this. One additional thing is I like to kirb the hook slightly. I twist the barb/point slightly to the right, about 15 degrees. I seldom miss a bass or bluegill on a popper so long as I remember to hesitate just a tad to let the fish take the fly. My $0.03 (inflation). Joe C.
  19. Just what I was looking for. Thanks guys. I'm going to tie one up for Doug Materne, Ed's son. He's been sharing a lot of his father's pics and notes with me for an article I'm working on. Materne also tied a grass shrimp imitation, but I've been unable to find any details about it. Joe C.
  20. Me likey!!! :headbang: Joe C.
  21. This is a classic pattern from the same era as the Gibbs Striper Bucktail, the Bart Forth Bucktail and the Blonde. I've only seen mention of it - does anyone know the pattern recipe or anything else about the fly? Joe C.
  22. I like the concept. Nice pattern. I'd suggest trying to dub the body with something shaggy and showing multiple colors (brown, olive, gray, green) and then brushing it a bit to get a bit more translucent bulk - that helps to imitate the softshell stage of the crayfish. You may also want to clip the tips off the feather chelea to make them just a bit more blunt. Very nice mudbug imitation! Joe C.
  23. Thanks for the kind words. We're filming the next set of flies today. Upcoming will be a Puglisi-style fly and maybe the Casual Dress nymph. Any specific requests? Joe C.
