Penn battle

Recommended Posts

Yes for salmon and heavier fresh water a 9 weight is a good choice. Not familiar with the reel and the drag but it would only be a problem in the salt if it is not sealed and neglected or not cleaned all reels sealed or not need to be cleaned and maintained around the salt. My 2 cents looks like a reasonable set up.

Interesting.. I never knew Penn had fly reels again... I have two of their Battle spinning reels on my skiff each day - and they've been good durable items in hard commercial use... Will have to keep an eye out for their fly reels again I guess..

I just went to their website, and the Battle fly reel is a very inexpensive model topping out at $90.99 for the 10 weight. Not sure just how durable it might be.

Sounds like a good setup to me. Never used that reel myself, but Penn has a good reputation and imo you don't need to break the bank on gear to be functional. You sometimes "get what you pay for" but with some hunting around you can save a few bucks and sacrifice minimal to no compromise in practical function. I've landed a number of sizable pike and a few muskies on my 8/9 Okuma SLV. You might also consider looking at reviews of the 10/11 wt SLV. Ive also heard good things about the Redington Behemoth.
