TheCream 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2010 I think I have caught all my channel cats on the fly accidentally on Clousers. I've caught a few in streams and a few more in ponds.

travis.gardner 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2010 You guys are making me envious!! Never thought of going for catfish even though I am planning on going for carp this summer. Kansas City has 9.5 miles of public river access on the little blue river and one of my friends catches blue cats all the time. Very litttle pressure and he tells me there are alot of fish. I think that I will have to give this a try on a fly rod. Travis
MrBrownliner 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2010 Travis, There is no fly fishing quite like brown lining! Carp are very spooky and can be a great challenge on the fly rod. Cats, contrary to popular belief are very predatory, especially channels. This 12 lb Flattie hit a size 4 crystal bugger in chartreuse.... the guys around the pond couldn't believe that I caught her on something that small when they were all fishing with huge bait casting rigs and blue gills as bait! For most of us when Tarpon or Trout waters are often difficult to come by when you have an hour to fish after work, your local creek, river, spillway, pond, etc.... are typically pretty accessible and have fantastic fishing opportunities if you have the right mind set about it. I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as a "trash fish" People pay thousands of dollars to fish for bones and they are more or less salt water suckers... go figure. Good luck and tight lines! Lee http://mrbrownliner.wordpress.com/ You guys are making me envious!! Never thought of going for catfish even though I am planning on going for carp this summer. SnickASaurusRex 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2010 I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as a "trash fish" Trash fish??? I like to target creak chub on my 0wt using embroidery mono as a tippet. There is a network of small creeks, emphasis on small just south of my house. I put the waders on and tie on a size 16 - 12 scud and the little B-tards just hit it like nothing else. On that kind of tippet with the drag set low it is like salmon fishing. All of that from essentially a minnow.
mswaterfowler 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2010 I have caught a couple on a pattern that is just a marabou tail, chenille body, and bead chain eyes. I always catch them with that fly in all black though. I have never caught them on any other colored fly.

I have never caught them on any other colored fly. Olive Woolly Bugger, especially with a bead head. It seems lately I have caught them on anything just about that I throw out there. (with the exception of a big ol bass popper) Any minnow imitation will work too.
TheCream 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2010 I lost a big...and I mean BIG...channel cat on the fly last week. :crying: I was bass fishing in a small pond known to have had some good cats a few years ago, but nobody has caught any of them recently. I was using a #6 "Ice Wabbit" streamer I originally tied for steelhead (Senyo pattern). Easy tie, flash for a tail (I used silver flashabou), tie in zonker strip for the wing at the hook bend, tie in diamond braid and wrap forward for an underbody, lash down the front of the zonker strip near the head, add a beard of ice dub and some eyes/epoxy for the head. I was catching some bass, but then on one cast stripped in along a weed line and saw a twitch, set the hook, and all heck broke loose. It was in shallow, and as it tore off out in front of me I saw it was a big channel cat, easily in the 8-10lb range. I got it turned, coming back in, had it on a short line and it tore out again, this time it popped my 4X fluoro tippet. :wallbash:
