Ridleyffo 0 Report post Posted May 6, 2010 I had a great trip this past weekend fishing some spring creeks and mountain freestoners in the foothills located in South Central PA a little northwest of Gettysburg in the South Mountain area. Three days of fishing with 7 other guys from our Delco Manning TU chapter organized and guided by Craig Hull of Troutgetter. On friday I had my best day in numbers (22) and landed the trifecta of wild fish on drys I have been dreaming of for the several years Ive been chasing trout now. I got the brookies, bows and browns all on a cdc and coastal deer caddis (actually the same I tied for "the ONe you turn to Swap". The takes were small but aggressive and my guide had me shortlining pocketwater and the fish werent very spooky so it turned out great. I actually fished the same fly from about 11 am until 4 pm. These wild fish were all small ranging in size from 4-8" but their beauty more than made up for their small size. Caught some stocked brookies early in the day on nymphs to about 16" On Saturday, I fished private water with the main guide at the top of South Mountain on a peacock farm. I got nine that day including a 20" stream bred wild brown and several browns and bows in the 17 and 18" range. I caught most on a #18 black quill dry on my 6.5' 3wt and 6x tippet. Funny thing on reflection was the limited fight these "trophy" fish gave. They certainly seemed like they understood the catch and release drill. They werent easy to catch and didnt come right to the net but I have to admit that I was a little disappointed in their hootzpah. Seemed almost like pet trout kept for the limited guides that the farmer allows on his property. ???????? Sunday we fished the Adams County TU project waters on Conewago Creek near Biglersville. Got 8 or 9 again on ant drys (dam its early for ant patterns) and had some real fun getting in tight to the banks and under alot of tree cover. The tips on improving my roll cast from Craig the day before certainly went a long way to getting these fish. The ant pattern the guide gave me was a parachute ant tied on an emerger hook. I also learned a new way to tie the dropper fly on with a perfection loop . What I want now is to find that 20" fish that has never seen a fly before or been hooked! Do I need to move out west or just spend more time walking the banks and looking for that renegade fish that survived all the put and take meat fisherman?
