FTF Fly Challenge: Clouser Minnow

Recommended Posts

Ok, here's what I've got - the Tandem Clouser. It's true to the Clouser style, but juiced up for the big predators. The black/natural tan/white, when wet, looks very close to the original Rapala minnow color. The tandem hook gives it extra motion that, when you watch it, makes you want to yell "Shake that thang!!!"

It's been a while since I've dropped in here. Here's my most effective Clouser Deep Minnow pattern:

Lookin' good... REALLLY good! I don't know how many folks have asked me how I get the bucktail to lay back nice and smooth--- it's all about selecting the right bucktail and knowing how to tie it in. I tied hundreds of these before I was fortunate enough to meet Bob Clouser last year and get some one-on-one tying instruction for this style from The Man himself. When you tie a Clouser Deep Minnow and Bob Clouser tells you it "looks just right" it's a hell of an ego-booster. Although, Bob is such a nice guy he would probably say that even if it looked like crap.

This is my Clouser Minnow with a marabou tail and rubber legs. Squirrel Tail wing over Olive Marabou with a Yellow Marabou Belly. Some extra long Gold Krystal Flash helps when the fish are really stuck to the bottom or the water is murky.

The Clouser Deep Minnow is a go to fly for smallmouth, I carry almost a whole box of them in early summer and late fall.
