bigpikeflies 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2011 These have been my favorite flies this year. They have 1mm foal heads and 1/2 inch eyes, tied on 5/0 Gama. They are about 10 inches long. They run in the top four inches of the water column. These are fished on an 8 weight rod with 10 weight line and 9 foot furled leader tipped with 3 feet of 30 pound floruo. NJ All Day 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2011 Those are fantastic! Whats the body material?
bad fish rising 0 Report post Posted December 20, 2011 What kind of 10wt line are you throwing on your 8wt rod? Is it like a pike line that floats or is it a sink tip? I've been using a 290gr switch indicator taper for huge articulated flies but it doesn't lay them out very well at distance.
kodiaksalmon 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2011 Nice flies.
bigpikeflies 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2011 I use a temple forks Axiom and TiCR X, both in 8 weight. I use a cortland ten weight pike taper and a 300 grain full sink on both. I also use a nine foot furled leader, this is what lays out these big flies. A standard leader does not have enough mass to transfer the weight through the tippet. Realize that you cannot cast a ten weight line, you must throw it like a shooting taper. You should only need one real false cast to punch most of a full line into a light wind. Of course a strong double haul is a must with these flies.
bad fish rising 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2011 I also cast an 8wt. Ticr x . including the switch line I throw a 24' 300gr. Dc rio line. I've been looking into furled leaders from feathercraft so I will take your advice and buy a few. I already know about the single shoot double haul or eat the fly. I use flies like your for huge brown trout
