skidoosh 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2012 Take a look and let me know what you think about the amount in the packages. CDC Post I grant you it certainly does not look like a lot - I googled it and here are some links to other pics with about the same amount. I think this is how the packages come. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CDC-OILER-PUFFS-17-COLORS-17-PACKS-Fly-Tying-Lot-NIP-/280581933064 http://www.graygoatflyfishing.com/products-page/hareline-dubbin/cdc-oiler-puffs/ I recently bought some Marc Petti Jean CDC- decent amount but expensive however I believe it was worth it. Horseshoes 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2012 But why would they all have different amounts and have cut tips They are suppose to be all the same in amount, just different in colour. That is what is fishy, pardon the pun.
Mickalo 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2012 If you look at the packages you'll see they are "Oiler Puffs" and not the regular CDC feathers which are usually larger. CDC puffs are much smaller and you really don't much per package. That's about the same no matter where you purchase them from my experience. SilverCreek 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2012 But why would they all have different amounts and have cut tips They are suppose to be all the same in amount, just different in colour. That is what is fishy, pardon the pun. They have not been cut at the tips. Puffs are a special feather and these have been sorted. If you are only using puffs, you pay for this vs buying an assortment of CDC and using the puffs. http://castersonlineflyshop.com/images/Harelinedubbin/cdcpuffs.jpg Here's a few puff emergers http://www.danica.com/flytier/rbeechinor/cdc_puff_emerger_side.jpg http://www.danica.com/flytier/rbeechinor/cdc_puff_emerger_bottom.jpg http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/181/dsc0014zd4.jpg/sr=1 Another puff fly. http://www.danica.com/flytier/pmouchel/cdc_puff.jpg
phg 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2012 All 3 packages are labeled as "CDC Oiler Puffs", but, if you look at the layout of the labels, it seems to me that they are from totally different batches. The package on the left seems quite full. The other two are kinda light. I suspect that the olive is from old stock that hadn't sold, and the other two from current inventories. The price is about what you would expect to pay. Anyway, I think it was a nice gesture on the part of the daughter, and as the old timers used to say, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." Horseshoes 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2012 Riff..that's what confused me and made the puffs look like they were snipped off. Mickalo and Silver creek thank you for clarifying the differences. Phg..I was more concerned about my daughter having one pulled over her. It wouldn't 't be the first time. I am blessed that she would go out of her to get me supplies for gift. Now I have to learn how to handle those little buggers.
michiganborn 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2012 Oiler puffs are different, and in my opinion a lot easier to use. If you want it as a wing just clip off the nipple at the bottom of it I like them and if there's even just 50 in a pack for 3$, heck that's 50 flies. Not too bad if ya ask me
planettrout 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2012 That pretty much looks like the amount one gets in the packaging from Hareline, Spirit River or Nature's Spirit...The puffs from Trouthunter have more in the package and the price reflects that: http://www.trouthunt.com/estore/details/2225/0/241 They may also be inverted and used thusly: http://www.blue-ribbon-flies.com/shop/pop_top_may_fly_pmd/ I like 'em... Horseshoes 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2012 Cool. I was out mackerel fishing last night and there were a lot of ducks just ducking around when a dog jumped in and swam after them. It was then that I saw these little puffy feathers going by just sitting on top. If only I had a minnow net I could have got 6 or 7 for free. Amazing. How many times had I seen them and never knew what they were? Go figure.
