SBPatt 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2012 I've used flat-waxed nylon for years, but am liking UTC more and more. Still use clear mono for a lot of s/w flies. Regards, Scott
petelangevin 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2012 Flymaster plus and flat waxed nylon work just fine. I use unwaxed flymaster as i buy it in bulk cones and not by the spool.
phg 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2012 Generally, salt water files are somewhat bigger that trout flies, so I tend to use larger sized of thread to cover the hook more quickly. Wrapping a 1/0 hook with 8/0 uni-thread could be time consuming. Flat waxed nylon, which is about equivalent to Danville's 3/0 thread, is a good choice, as it lays flat but still covers the shank quickly. I have also used size A and size B nylon rod winding threads. Good tension and smooth wraps are the key.
Peterjay 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2012 If you do any amount of saltwater tying, you're eventually gonna need just about everything you use in fresh water, and in more colors. My workhorses are 8/0 UNI-thread or 140 denier Ultra thread, but I also use Danville flat waxed nylon, 6/0 Uni-thread, clear monofilament thread, and nylon sewing thread for building up bodies and heads. If all you want to do is whip up a few Clousers, etc., flat waxed nylon will do the trick, but if you're going to get serious about saltwater tying, there's no one thread that's gonna suit all your needs. agn54 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2012 Peterjay pretty much covered it. The only one I would add to his collection is I really like using Gudebrod A rod wrapping thread for building up heads which I then epoxy.
tidewaterfly 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2012 Agree with what Peter posted! I use the Danville Flat Nylon, which I have in both Waxed & no wax, for the majority of my tying, but also use other threads depending on the pattern & size.
