Fly Tying

Still working on the How To Bubble Fly video... did get sidetracked with a request from YouTube on how we made the DIY Tanago Rod - one where we made it with a Cork Handle instead of a Wooden Handle.

Simple DIY that uses:
- Ice Fishing Blank
- Wine Cork
- Epoxy
- Rod Wrap Thread or similar material

More sidetracks... this time, more fishing! Too nice an evening Sunday to not go fishing. Went for a quick trip to a local pond. Decided to fish the 4wt Redington Pursuit Rod with the Echo Ion 2/3 Fly Reel spooled with a Rio Trout Max Skagit Head in 200 grains.

Bite started slow but picked up as the evening progressed. Managed catching little Bluegill and Sunfish once we settled on an Elk Hair Caddis. No Bruisers, but after a while decided to use one Bluegill as live bait!

Sure enough had nice Bass take the Bluegill! Fun Fishing the 4wt and Rio Trout Max.

No fishing this evening; sidetracked with fly tying at Cabelas where the Dallas Fly Fishers were hosting free fly tying lessons! Learned a midge pattern that is easier to tie than the technique I was using. Fun stuff!

The other day we caught a nice Bass using a Bluegill for live bait. Decided to try it again using a Water Wolf Camera to get underwater video of the action. Brought a spinning rod for fishing the Water Wolf Camera and Live Bait Rig. Also, brought the two piece Micro Fly Rod and the midge pattern we tied at Tuesday's Dallas Fly Fishers' free fly tying classes held at Cabelas in Allen every Tuesday this month!

In short order caught a little Bluegill, baited up the Water Wolf Camera and Live Bait Rig, and casted the rig into the pond. Let it sit for about 15" then decided to check it. While doing so, dropped the rig and broke the cabling used to connect the hook and line to the camera... Bummer.

Put the camera away, and shifted to fishing the Micro Fly Rod. Caught a number of little Bluegill and Sunfish. All were small but were still fun to catch. While fishing, was asked by someone to demo the casting of the Micro Fly Rod. Showed how the fly rod casts... below is the video of the quick trip to the Celebration Park's East Pond that shows how we started the day trying for an action shot with the Water Wolf Camera and Live Bait Rig, fishing with the two piece Micro Fly Rod, and then shifting to a demo of the little fly rod. Quick Trip with the Water Wolf Camera... Two Piece Micro Fly Rod Demo.

Fun stuff!

PS: Two Piece Micro Fly Rod is made with the top two sections of an 8wt Fly Rod that we broke but did not want to throw it away. Recycled it by making it into a Micro Fly Rod using a reel seat from a Pen Fishing Rod and a mini Fly Reel.

Lots of fun the other day at the local pond fishing with the Micro Fly Rod. While there, decided to put bait on the Water Wolf Camera Rig and toss it in the pond to see what was lurking below. It was mainly Bluegill and Sunfish, but did get a glimpse of Catfish and a Bass... but, for the most part, it was mainly turtles taking our bait!

Finished the "How We Fish Bubble Fly Rigs" video to go with the article, "How to Set Up Bubble Fly Rigs"! Video shows the three rigs we detailed in the article.... Lots of fun showing how we fish them; even caught a fish or two!

Made it to the Lower Illinois River Saturday; two of us limited out on Rainbow Trout of which one used the Bubble Fly Rig - "Ajusta Bubble" and PowerWorms to catch his six! Still working on the video but here is a snippet of some of the action!

Stopped at Cabelas in Allen to check out the Fly Tying Class that the Dallas Fly Fishers have been holding every Tuesday for the month of October. This was the last one for the month, then the Dallas Fly Fishers will shift to Fly Tying Demos on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Also, while there tonight, learned the Dallas Fly Fishers will be hosting a TPWD Basic Fly Fishing Class at LLELA - Lake Lewisville Ecological Learning Area, on Saturday October 27, 2018. Should be a fun time for those interested in learning to fly fish! For more details on the event and the Dallas Fly Fishers, see the links posted on our blog. Note: The live feed while at Cabelas had issues; added pictures and past video snippets of fishing trips to LLELA.

Finished the video... Fun stuff! Do check back periodically. Trout Stocking Season is just around the corner in Texas, and it starts next week on the Blue River and other locations in Oklahoma. Hope to get a round of trout fishing at the Blue River and/or Medicine Park in November. Limited Out on Lower Illinois River.

Great time of year with trout stockings in Texas just around the corner. Precursor to the happenings in Texas is the Blue River - less than 2 hours from the DFW Metroplex for those interested in Rainbow Trout and fishing a river! That said, TPWD releases its stocking schedule about mid-November, so be on the look out! Be on the watch for it. TRWD however announced its stocking for the Trinity River in Fort Worth as well as TRWD Flyfest 4 (March 2019). Do keep your calendars open for this event - fun one and the chance to catch some nice sized trout is a possibility. For more see, our blog post... at Stocker Trout Fishing. Has links to TRWD's announcement plus past videos from the Flyfest!
