Fly Tying

Recommended Posts

Learned trout were stocked earlier this week at LLELA - Lake Lewisville Ecological Learning Area. Not been to LLELA for awhile, decided to give it a go. Struck out but did hear from another fisherman that he had several on the line that morning but missed landing them. Later, did see the same fisherman land one... so there are trout at LLELA. Just not on our hooks... Bummer!

Decided to call it a trip but would stop at a pond on the way home in hopes of catching at least a fish so as not to call the day a bust. Ended up catching two bass at the pond by the Allen Cinemark. One went for a red Damsel Fly, and the other went for a PMOT - Purple Marabou and Orange Thing! Woohoo... was an awesome day fishing!

After trying different strike indicators over the years, settled on this find - the Corqs Strike Indicator! Made out of cork and a rubber O-ring; it does not slip and casts well.

Do check out our product review of the Corqs Strike Indicator where we talk about why we like it as well as detail other strike indicators that we have used in the past!

Corqs Strike Indicators get an "Alrighty Then" Rating from the Team. We will buy these again!

Able to get a round of trout fishing at a local pond Saturday morning. Was a tough go with temps in the 30s and a slow bite.

After several hours found the pattern... a slow swing of the rod to move the Near Deere / Powerworm slowly through the water, had several bites, and then a trout struck and was on briefly before throwing the hook!

Kept at it, and managed to finally hook and land two trout. Lost the Powerworm but luckily trout kept striking the Near Deere; just kept missing the hook sets!

PS: Do check back, next Near Deere Give Away is for two White Near Deere in the 1/80oz weight and a Marilyn Monroe Tenkara Fly!

Here is a website - http://www.iFishNews.com we maintain that is more a fishing information and news aggregator than a traditional website or blog. It has fishing info and reports from our area in North Texas and Oklahoma as well as fishing information around the USA and other parts of the world. "How We Stay Aware of Fishing Hapenings...?

Starting an impromptu live stream for some ukulele fun and fishing Q&A! Plus a Near Deere Give Away with a twist...

This round we are giving away two White Near Deere tied on 1/80oz fly jigs and one Marilyn Monroe Tenkara Fly. The extra weight of the 1/80 oz fly jigs helps fishing deeper spots when the trout are lurking deep. And, the white color is what we had the local trout interested in last Saturday when the temps were well below freezing!

To win this round... we wrote down a number from 1 to 100 on our whiteboard. First to guess the number and post in the comments either on this video or on our Facebook Page wins the number we wrote down wins! That is first to guess the number with a US address wins!

Addendum: One modification to the rules,

- One entry per day to guess the number. We are located in the US Central timezone.

- We will provide comments indicating a Win, else will give a hint to the answer at least once a day.

Cold temps Saturday morning – February 16, 2019! Decided to go a round at Frisco Commons for some recently stocked Rainbow Trout. Trout derby was held last weekend; was not able to make it.

Temps were in the low 30s, had to bundle up well… layered clothing did the trick but still forgot the gloves like last weekend when we fished Rowlett..

Fished from 8:30 to 4:30, caught and released five trout. Lost several others while bringing them in, and had a lot more missed hook sets. Still lots of fun, and was able to limit out for the first time this year… woohoo!

PS: Near Deere Give Away is still in-progress… do give it a go and guess a number from 1 to 100 and post in the comments on our YouTube Channel – COAF Field Team!

Three trout derbies in the county today; may make it to one... hoping! Did a quick tie video on one of three fishing flies we like to keep in the fly box! Mixed up the video this time by adding background info, the recipe for the pattern, suggestions for fishing the GRHEN, along with the video of us tying one. This variant uses a bead head and pheasant tail instead of hares ear guard hairs for the the tail of the fishing fly. Do give it a try!

Short on time Saturday but lots of action fishing a Texas Pond in Murphy Texas for stocked Rainbow Trout! Forgot the GRHEN we tied the other day but luckily the Olive Near Deere fished under a Corqs Strike Indicator did the trick to catch a limit of trout!

Windy day with a slight adjustment in the presentation going from a dead drift to short pulls on the line to get the trout to strike!

Fun times....!

Bite was on at Towne Lake in McKinney, too. Still editing the video but did get a picture of Charlie checking out his first Rainbow Trout! Charlie's First Rainbow Trout.

Decided to get the switch rod out in preparation for next Saturday's TRWD Flyfest. Tend to use the switch rod while fishing for trout as longer cast are needed at times and like the ease of less and/or no false casting.

Stopped at Towne Lake in McKinney and got a round of practice casts in. No trout but still good to bend the rod. Then, headed to City Complex Pond in Murphy and got lots of practice in... and even limited out on trout!

Fun times... hope to do a repeat next Saturday at TRWD Flyfest!

Been getting sidetracked for some time since we fished the Lower Illinois River in Oklahoma last year. Been wanting to post the catch and cook video of the brunch we had following the trip. We caught a Striped Bass and two Rainbow Trout we kept for the table. Did get other fish but released them instead. That said, do check out the catch and cook video; and do keep in mind for those who may catch a bruiser trout this weekend at TRWD Flyfest 2019!
