Bimini15 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2018 I am wondering if there is a type or hackle better suited than others for wally wings. Seems like I only see mallard flank in the few videos I have watched. Is there a reason or am I just not watching enough videos?

whatfly 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2018 Hopefully ScottP will chime in here, but I took a class on the subject at one of the FFF Conclaves years ago and we used Whiting American Hen Saddles for the wings. I must confess other than a little experimentation at the time, I've never bothered to tie them since because they seemed like more work than they were worth, but they do many a pretty tie. chugbug27 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2018 Al & Betty also came up with cutting out the bottom inside barbs after tying in the wally wings, to prevent spinning problems with Wally wings, there's an article somewhere.

tjm 0 Report post Posted May 4, 2018 well, some where else Al has stated bluntly that Wonder Wings and Wally Wings are "totally different" In this article by Wally Lutz, it says use " a waterfowl or upland bird body feather." http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/fotw2/061702fotw.php I discovered this while trying to find out what "wally wings' are. I saw a nice example done in wood duck and another in what looked like pheasant body along the way as I looked for the pattern.
chugbug27 0 Report post Posted May 5, 2018 My bad, I even called Gretchen Betty....
tjm 0 Report post Posted May 5, 2018 I'd have to look closer, but I think Wally strips the stem out of the feather and uses just one feather for both wings, while Al/Gretchen uses two feathers and leaves a portion of the stem in. Both look nice but I suspect Wonder Wing stands up to fish better. Chug, Betty-Beatty, pretty close and Mvendon knew who you meant. I can never remember any more than Al...
