  1. Thanks speyman! For fishing flies goes, I usually fish from size 6 up to 12, but most in the size 8. For that I really like the taper on the BV hook aswell. The partridge hooks are decent, but are not the best around. Nice flies by the way! I will try to post a spey style fly that I tied in a size 8 on a BV hook. Phil
  2. You have done it again Bob!!! Love the flies and the hook comparisons! Not much different between the AJ spey and the Bartleet Traditional eh? How do you feel their fishing ability differs? The talon has a nice look to it eh! I think I prefer the others though. Phil
  3. Thanks Willow! You are my type of guy! Lee Wulff flies and PJ flies! Im way jealous. I do like the plain look of the BV hooks because it doesn't seem to overpower a fly too much. I do like the extremely tapered eye. I just tie fishing flies, so I am not too much into the framing ones. I have not tried the Partridge spey hooks yet, I haven't heard of them until now. I want to pick up a couple boxes of 100's for salmon flies for this coming June, so I was feeling the water on how everyone feels about the hooks. Phil
  4. Hey guys, what is your hook preference? Daiichi Alec Jackson Spey hooks, or the Daiichi Veverka's salmon hooks? I think I sway towards the Veverka's hook more then the Alec Jackson. What do you guys prefer? Phil
  5. Hey Bob! What is the different between pony and buck tail? Is pony like a stiff fox hair? By the way those look killer! would clean up this area good! Phil
  6. Thanks Bob, The picture is a little bad. The squirrel (tied short) will give support to the fox. I will let you know what I take with it.
  7. I sent you a pm about some things
  8. A new addition to the fly pattern database has been submitted by RoyalWulff: White Wing Blue Charm
  9. I have yet to tie or fish an egg fly, but I am thinking I will try them out. Do you guys weight the flies? Or do you weight the leader to get them down? I plan to make them from ice dub or chenille seeing I dont have egg foam or yarn or what ever it is. Thanks, Phil
  10. I think poul jorgensens Salmon Flies is a good introduction for anyone who havent yet tied salmon flies. The techniques used in fishing flies are the ones you use for classics. I find Poul's step by steps for feather wings are great. This is a book that has been good to me, and it doesnt cost an arm and a leg.
  11. Hey Sorry Maddog, I didnt noticed you were asking a question aswell, I read it too fast. It depends on where you are fishing, here I use kingfisher blue, highlander green, yellow; and also a selection of strung hackle. Phil
  12. I agree with Maddog, good wet fly hackle is essential for salmon flies. I like to buy coloured hen necks because you get feathers for all sizes from 12 down past 2. If you are fishing I can answer a lot of questions for you. Squirrel tail is decent for wings. But I find the most important aspect is the hook, I notice (even more then tying trout flies) quality hooks are essential. Anyways, give us some more info about the types of flies you want to tie. Phil
  13. Thanks Smallie!! I hope some great patterns will be posted.
  14. I have a photo of a mayfly and I am just wondering what it would be. Also what fly pattern do you think would suit this fly? Thanks for the help... and sorry again, lol
  15. love the stuff. Mix it-dub it- do anything with it, it rocks.
  16. I agree with tony, Usually the whiting farms tyer's pack has a few patches of these. I bought a pack to see what they were all about, and found some decent stuff in them. But I prefer having whole skins not just patches. Anyways, good luck on tying them. ALso in the water they will all stick together and the seperation of the fibers will make the wing stand up better. Phil
  17. Im not sure Big E, I remember seeing something about this, so if you give me a bit I can dig it out. I think you will have to really sort over the hide and divide it up specifically. As in short straight hair, and thick spinning hair. I know the back is usually stiffer, and better for wings. The belly will be best for spinning. Give me a bit and ill see what i can find, Phil
  18. Quality hackle, and good hooks (im on a tiemco binge right now)
  19. I use mustad salmon hooks to fish, but to my eye they arent pretty enough. I like the look of the bartleet supreme or bartleet traditional made by partridge. I use these to fish also, but they are a nice shape to frame. Others use a curved shank salmon hook made by daiichi they look nice also. One hook that I want to try and am looking into picking some up, is the Alec Jackson spey hooks, they look hot and I hear fish decent also. Look for those. That would be a start. But salmon hooks are much more expensive then trout hooks. Also the black finish is called "japaned" let us know how you end up, Phil
  20. Can you be more specific about the hook. Do you mean a black finished salmon hook or a hook for tying a salmon fly? If you mean a salmon hook, then anywhere you can buy tying materials you can buy salmon hooks. Mustad or any major hook maker will be adequate. If you mean a hook for tying a salmon fly, pattern then we need to know what sort of hook you are after. RW
  21. Those are the trays that the uni spools come in. I think JS probably gets thier spools sent to them in those. At the fly shop by my house the owner has lots of various spools in them, wire/rib and others. I have uni and danville stuff in it (holds 20 spools). I like them because they are see through and stack well. From what I can tell, they will fit most any spool size, as long as it is a weirdly huge spool. Phil
  22. These are the best http://www.jsflyfishing.com/cgi-bin/item/T...torage-Box.html Phil
  23. Thanks Willow, I want eyed hooks, as I do not have any gut for blind eyes. Thanks for the tips. Now I got to try to find a good dealer for these hooks. The reason I didnt want think wire, is because I have heard the partridge traditional bartleets have a tendency to break off rocks or on salmon, so I was thinking, if this was true, I would want a stronger hook. Phil
  24. Hey Mark, They do look great! You are right, now that I look at it, it is because the fly is turned a little. My mistake. I really like the bend of the hook, and the shank looks pretty good too! I dont know how I feel about the straight eye though. I do however really like the finish of the hook! Something I find is difficult to do. Hook finishes often repell me. So Mark, are you going to let the cat out of the bag? We are all dying to know what hook this is. By the way, how do you like the mustad 3906b for softies? Phil
