  1. You can buy small springs or material clips made for the vises at any good shop. They are very inexpensive, like a couple of bucks but well worth the look
  2. You should have grabbed it and put it the gunny sack
  3. Go to your local video rental store and get some empty VHS cases then go to your local tackle/fly shop and buy large ripple foam, usually comes with a sheet of ripple and a sheet of smooth both with peel and stick backs. Cut the foam to size, put the ripple in the deep side and the smooth in the top. I've been using them for years for large streamers and clousers. The foam is also available from Cabekas and Bass Pro on line. Don't worry about the posts in the deep side of the box, just press the foam over them.
  4. All depends on the pattern you are tying. Those size hooks won't show much but it will work in place of peacock and then overwrapped.
  5. Looks like a goose feather to me officer.
  6. Attach it well behind the jaws on the high side of the vise. It is used as a material clip to hold longer material attached to the hook for later wrapping etc., out of the way while you work through the earlier stages of the tie. You may end up moving it a few times but eventually you will find a home base for it.
  7. Very nice indeed. Simple but effective.
  8. Thanks for the input. I thought of the biot end of it also they are pretty stiff and some could be used as tails also.
  9. www.flytyingfurs.com from 5.00 to 15.00 natural and dyed
  10. Came back from a long walk on the beach with the dog (57, some light low cloud, little or no wind, mid falling tide, magnificent sunrise. Had to do that for all in the NE and mid-west) and as usual in the early morning there is the occasional clean and freshly dropped Gull feather. Often wondered if anybody uses them, and or how?
  11. Great service, nice people. Good recomendation. You should print these responses and take them to the shop, couldn't hurt.
  12. Great thread. I think that even though I fish whatever gear is suitable at the time I prefer to fly fish because I feel more in to the whole thing and more involved while at the same time just zoning out. It's the whole Zen thing man.
  13. Great thread, are we junk collectors or what?
  14. Glad I looked at this post I love his books, especially "A pirate looks at Fifty". Thanks for the heads up I'll go find it.
  15. Bill, great idea and format. Good luck in '05 both with the journal and on the beach. Mike
  16. I'm with Onshore with the St. Croix but as he said they are pricey and the type of rod you just keep to yourself. I would think that with you location there a quite a few good tackle shops in addition to the ones mentioned. Go in tell them what you want it for and I'm sure they will hook you up with a complete outfit at a manageable price.
  17. Just received an order from Al Beatty at BT's. Not only was it shipped quickly but the quality of the products was better than advertised. Try his dubbing wax. I had ordered his rotary tying video and he shipped me a VHS instead of the DVD version I wanted ( my fault in the ordering process ). I emailed Al and asked if I could return the tape and get the disk instead. Al said keep the tape and pass it on to your local shop or share it with a club and I'll send you the disk. It really doesn't get any better than that Wasn't sure where to post this hope it gets out to everyone. Mike Clancy

  20. I'm getting ready(that means I'm thinking about it) to tie up some Prince of Tides for the local waters and your idea of twisting some wire could be expanded some by using some complementary flash material with the wire and and and. This could get really good.
  21. Put the fly in your vise or a tester/holder, put your tying light on it and kill the flash on the camera. Use a solid colored background so it doesn't reflect the light too much. Just some suggestions, got to play with it til it's right. One of the great things about digital cameras.
  22. A good source of fine wire is old charger and extension cords. I would think that even if it was all one color and you twist a few strands together you would get a good reflective quality as well as strengthening the wrap and make it all more fish proof. Love to take a look at what you've done. If you can post a pic.
  23. Mustad, Partridge and Tiemco depending on size and salt content
