    caddis larva

The first one is called a little orange caddis or a Needle Fly (Leuctra grandis) The under water shots are the flies in a small collection bottle (empty cement and thinner bottles) I got about 250 from a guy where he worked...

Just thought some of you from SE. Pa. would like to see some of the free living caddis we have in pa.
  5. sttripers, blues, weaks, and most all saltwater game fish key in on the eye when attacking bait...In fresh water bass and other game fish including trout when they get large enough to eat meat will hit bait head first. they use the eye as a referance. all fish must swallow baitfish head first cause of the fins. I put eyes on all my salt patterns and streamers.....I like to use e-z shape sparkle body for my fresh water flies. its as easy as putting a drop for the background and add a contrasting color for the pupil. I'm starting to use it for my salt patterns because i get tired of the eyes getting knock off from the sand.... I still use all the other types of eyes yet. eyes make a differance...
  6. My only problem with these get togethers is I work weekends at a fly shop...So I miss all the fun.. but then I fish monday thru friday... I'd like to see a get together on a week day even if its a one day event..
  7. Elk hair caddis, Patriot, and an Adams, all in sizes 14 to 22......
  8. since we are on the subject of pets here's an Idea....take a 50 gal. aqarium, set it up so you can cast a tip section of a rod and a leader tied to the tip. add a fly tied like fish food (tetra flake fly) now cast into the tank....watch out the guppys will hit hard...
  9. I think it depends on the conditions, I do know that the wings are the first thing a trout sees in its window of sight.. as for the adams I use white poly for the wing and take a fine marker and put bars on it before dividing the wing seems to work as good as a tradional pattern..I started using poly for all my wings for 2 reasons, 1 its easier and its water proof......just my .02
  10. my cat used to eat flashabou, just passed on through..unless its treated with a chemical i never seen any thing happen to any of my dogs or cats from chewin some of the materials except me and the shutgun..........

  12. While on yhe subject of feathers on the skin, you should hang your necks up so the oil drains into the feather stem. Lefty Kreh told me this years ago. Also thats how we used to store them after skinning and drying...
  13. Jason where r u in pa.????????? Where do fish for carp.??????????I fish the Neshamminy, Tohickon, and Sckulkill river for them, along with some other areas.......7lb. carp on a 5 weight with 4x tippit..ah to hear the drag sing is music to my ears..........
  14. The only problem with half hitches they will come undone unless you use cement, one way to lock your half hitches is to do the last hitch backwards of the others. This will lock the half hitches. A good 4 to 5 turn whip finish should not come undone, if you do it right. On my drys I dont use cement and I dont have any problems with the knot coming undone.
  15. welcome to the site from another se. pa guy. are you taking jerry's class???
  16. Dick Talleur's book is the one i recommand for all my students....It covers all the tying techniques to ty the major trout flies. great step by step photos..Its called Basi Fly Tying...about 35.00 to 45.00, depending on whether you want the spiral bound or standard..
  17. depending on what area of new england.. you could use some smelt patterns, a hares ear, caddis patterns, quill gordons, blue quills, little black stone, and midge patterns..
  18. here in s.e. pa. we use some mayfly duns and a damsel dry. we found the local carp were tail slapping the water and knocking down damsels with a spash of water. we would then trow a damsel pattern and the carp would turn on it...
  19. The only thing is he doesn't use thread, more like building a model...lots of glue and materials (latex)....other wise a fantasic artist...
  20. I us E-Z shape sparkle body for years now. No need for a wheel, just work it on and hang to dry... You can also add eyes with it by getting differant colors !!!!!!!!!!
  21. go to the orvis web site and in the fly section, click on the fly and it will give you the complete pattern.
