  1. Very kind words, thank you. I'm still struggling to use Starling in place of Jungle Cock for cheeks. I love the look of that little dab of iridescence next to the "eye" but getting them to stay in place is proving tough.
  2. The wings on this one should have been Mallard and not Wood Duck- PETER ROSS VARIANT HOOK: #12 2XL NYMPH THREAD: BLACK TAIL: GOLDEN PHEASANT TIPS ABDOMEN: GOLD TINSEL -MEDIUM RIB: GOLD WIRE- MEDIUM THORAX: HARLINE DUBBING RED AND BLACK MIX HACKLE: HEN CAPE - BLACK WING: WOOD DUCK - LEMON CHEEKS: STARLING
  3. Congratulations! Grab a pair of flesh toned latex gloves on the way out, they make great nymph bodies!
  4. You might be surprised at how much better your vise will "feel" cleaned and lubed. I know on my HMH little particles of fur and quills collect and build on the moving parts and eventually inhibit the smoothness of the vise. I posted a care and maintenance vid specifically for a Regal Rev on the previous page. Seems to be quick and easy to do.
  5. Thanks- I just got a couple packs of firehole hooks, they've been out of stock and are a late Christmas present from my daughter. They're really nice hooks in general but exceptionally nice for soft hackles. I'm struggling with the temptation to tie more but my soft hackle box is pretty full at the moment. @SBPatt Scott your deer hair work is second to none. Absolutely perfect!
  6. We have a 4 bedroom and our daughters both own their own homes now so you would think I could have at least one room right? NO, because have six grand children and the 2 extra bedrooms are now they're "stay over" rooms. Oh well, I still have my corner in bedroom # 3 (Office) and it keeps me from over buying stuff I would probably never use- LOL. The shop looks great Mike!

  9. My eye's seem to get worse every day, but since I own a TRV I thought the jaw tip profile looked familiar.
  10. I'd love to but I can't afford to pay others to do everything our home requires and so....
  11. Yes and after I finished laughing I remembered this 'ole chestnut! https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/steven-spielberg-condemned-killing-dinosaur-718117
  12. I remember someone on here said they caught a Rainbow on a bare hook. I think he said he was fishing a 2 fly set up. One of the two fallen apart so he cut away the remaining thread/fibers but left the hook on the line and kept fishing with the remaining fly. The story goes the trout chose the bare hook over the fly.
  13. Nice Fly Toothy- what make is your vise? The jaws look like a TRV- That's a great looking #22!
  14. I kind of figured you would know about materials under clear-
  15. The local Enviro Nazis in my state are desperate ban hunting and fishing. They a began an organized campaign to harass sportsman a few years back. Hunters mostly but there were also incidents with anglers. Time honored "protesting" methods such as throwing rocks at someone fishing or running through the woods in deer costumes while banging on drums during deer season. Only a matter of time until one of them got shot (it's still illegal to shoot hippies even if they are wearing a deer costume in the woods). Here in Mass as in California all sorts of nutty behavior is taken seriously, even encouraged. That is UNTIL said behavior starts impacting tax revenues, then you've gone too far! Sportsmen here still generate more income for our state to waste than the meat is murder crowd and so- Under Massachusetts law, no person shall obstruct, interfere with or otherwise prevent the lawful taking of fish or wildlife by another. ... A person who sustains damage from an act in violation of the law may seek civil action for punitive damages.Mar 7, 2020

  18. Not to worry Mark the extreme climate will keep "those who know better than you" from moving in and ruining your state. I wish I could say the same for the rest of us-
  19. It's a great technique but certainly not my idea and not just for tags- I usually tie with clear tubing because you can blend colors underneath with thread, floss, tinsel, flash. On this Hairy Worm I used a yellow and green floss under the clear tube. I used thread under this one and accented the brown with a brown sharpie.
  20. Thanks- this is a new one for me so I haven't fished it yet. It looked like a good pattern so I decided to copy it. My tie isn't perfect, i noticed after I took the photo the clear tube is a little wonky on the lower abdomen (the fish won't care). My current lighting is a little weak when tying in at night and I was having trouble with my hands casting shadows. I'm getting a new much better desk lamp tomorrow. I'm glad to hear that it's a fish catcher for you, maybe it will be here in Mass as well? There's no added weight to the version I tied per the tyer who posted the pattern on line. A small bead would certainly help get it down. Personally I prefer the fly be weighted and not to add split shot If I have a choice. 90% of the water I fish is 3' or less so sometimes and unweighted nymph emerger is a good thing.
  21. Nice work this month everyone! GRAPHIC CADDIS HOOK: SCUD #12 THREAD: CHARTRUSE- BLACK 8/0 TAG: SILVER MYLAR UNDER CLEAR MICRO TUBE ABDOMEN/BODY: CHARTRUSE THREAD UNDER CLEAR MICRO TUBE THORAX: GREY OSTRICH HERL LEGS: HUGARIAN PARTRIDGE ANTENNAE: LEMON WOOD DUCK HEAD: BLACK THREAD
  22. Pro tip 2: I know a guy, we'll call him um "Joe", who brings his damaged/beat up flies 6 or 8 at a time to work. Joe keeps a cuticle cutter and razor blade in his desk and when his work load permits he cuts them down to salvage the hook and or bead. Why spend valuable desk tying time cutting down flies?
  23. That's a good looking fly- you should be happy.
  24. Poopdeck/Mike, I too only tie flies that I fish with. No "art" or "project" flies for me. I do use a lot of patterns and sizes but I'm not fast at tying, it can take me an hour to produce a fly that a pro can do in 12 minutes. I'm not interested in tying dozens of flies in a sitting just to fill fly boxes, my focus is on quality (relative to my ability and skill) not quantity. I enjoy having a box of well tied flies even though it won't make much of a difference to the fish. (I've caught some really nice fish on some awful flies). I do like to hunt the net for and to try different patterns but everyone of them will hit the water. I usually tie 2 in a few sizes. If they don't produce after a season I'll cut them down and re use the hooks. I rotate through the year between 5 small fly boxes, carrying 3 of them on the water. I also have 1 large box for my salmon flies. I have never managed to completely fill any of them. I fish mostly small streams with lots of fly eating over hangs and lots of submerge debris and seem to lose them as fast as I tie them. Like you guys I try to balance the rate of attrition to the rate of production. I do have a huge appreciation for those that tie classic salmon flies and realistics weather they fish with them or not. It requires a lot of skill to tie those types of flies.
  25. Let me share some of my random thoughts from this past year with you- Why is it always necessary that I work late whenever the May fly's are hatching but In the winter I'm done everyday at 3:30. Just in time for nightfall, Yay... I wonder how many Saturdays I have watched slip past me while being stuck at some 2 year old's birthday party that my wife forced me to attend because she didn't want to be bored alone? Do 2 year olds even really have friends? For what we paid for that gift I could have had some grizzly hackle. Another 4 hours I'll never have back and they don't even have beer at these things. Don't they know today is perfect fishing weather, why didn't these people have their stupid wedding at night? Whoever thought up the "Jack and Jill" shower needs to be punched in mouth. It will probably rain but least I can fish during next week's baby shower. What do you mean that because of covid it's a "drive through" shower and will only take 20 minutes? I was going fishing! Why is the funeral is on Saturday? How long do we have to be there? But I'm half way to the river and she picks now to go into labor? I can't believe she said "WE would love to be at your Super Bowl party", I was going to tie flies-but at least there's beer at these things. They cancelled the Fly Fishing Show because the facility is being used for Covid testing? What's wrong with using the #@$% High School? I need materials. Relax Maction, you're among friends-
