spm 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2014 I have always used the simple plastic boxes with separate comparments. A friend showed me his C&F Designs fly box with the slitted foam strips and I liked the way it held the flies from blowing away on the stream. So, I bought a couple. Here's my question: Has anyone noticed that the delicate hackles, tails, etc. get bent up when inserting the flies into the foam slits? Am I just not loading the box correctly? Thanks, steve
utyer 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2014 I usually put all my dry flies with hackle in the plastic compartment boxes. I reserve the slit foam boxes for wets, nymphs and streamers. I don't buy those expensive C $ F boxes at all. There are plenty of cheap boxes that hold my flies just fine.
oldtrout58 0 Report post Posted May 25, 2014 Yes, I hate that. It's one of the reasons I tie parachute patterns. I have glued magnetic strips into my compartment boxes, but that bent the hackles too. It did keep them in the box.
Crackaig 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2014 There are boxes available with slotted foam on one side and compartments on the other. Nymphs in the foam, hackled dry flies in the compartments, problem solved. Cheers, C.

FlaFly 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2014 On the Hatches page, they advertise several fly boxes that have foam strips with slots, separated by a depression where I've always assumed the hackle end should go.
FlaFly 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2014 Whoops. just noticed Crackaig already said the same thing.
spm 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2014 Thanks for all the responses. I never watched him load his box, so don't know how he did it. Shouldn't be this difficult, but then, I tend to over-think everything. I just finished transfering my dry flies back into the plastic compartment box. steve
Spanky29ca 0 Report post Posted May 26, 2014 I use the compartment box as we'll for my dries, another box I use is the orvis dropper rig box, I like to have my dry dropper and nymph rigs ready to go while out on the stream if possible. Here's a link http://www.orvis.com/store/product.aspx?pf_id=76kh
