Krystal flash help

Recommended Posts

When I use Krystal flash for a rib, I end up stretching it out way to much, and it loses the turns that catch the light. Is it just me, or is it a common problem, and is there a solution.

It's not just you. Ribbing with krystal flash gives the same result as flashabou or pearlescent mylar tinsel. If you need more flash, you might take a look at holographic tinsel.

If you want the twist to catch light, you'll need to twist it as you wind. By nature, it will tend to flatten out. Try using more than one strand and twist it together before winding the rib.

Krystal Flash & Flashabou both are not really intended for use as ribbing, as they're quite thin & stretch out of shape as you've discovered. Try using a couple of strands , (3 or 4) together or go to a heavier type of flash material for ribbing as Bugsy has suggested.

Krystal flash is probably the least likely flash material to use for ribbing for the reasons you cited and it does not have a very strong tensile strength which is one of the most important reasons for ribbing. Use wire or med.or sm. flash strips instead. Krystal flash is better suited for winging or free flowing strands in a pattern. BUT...

...Rules are meant to be broken. Just know your material's limitations, then do what you like.

krystal flash may not be the optimum material for ribbing but it can be used

flattened or not it still will reflect light. regular flat tinsel does

twist a few strands into a rope

use holographic tinsel or even round, oval or embossed tinsel for ribbing

or

mini flat braid

or

iridescent threads
