Rod Wrapping Thread (off topic)

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys

The Rod Building Forums don't have the info I'm looking for so I thought I would ask here. I have a vintage bamboo rod that has the Gudebrod Black-yellow Classic Twist thread that was so popular back in the day. I found a spool available for 12.50 plus shipping and was looking for an alternative.

I read that Bullard International has a Yellow/Black thread called Bullard Craftsman Twist but cannot find a dealer anywhere nor can I find the company itself which is in Texas. This thread looks like a perfect match for my Ferrule repair if i can only find a dealer...anyone know of one??

Just replied to your Pm Dan before I saw this post. I actually have various classic twist colors on hand that I bought up before Gudebrod went out of business, I may have the yellow/black. I'll look and let you know.

Are you sure it's yellow/black twist thread? if it's a granger, it might be white/black, with yellowing of the varnish over the decades. and some varnishes yellow colors immediately, very slightly, with their warm tone.

ProWrap Tiger Thread may work too: http://www.hopkinsholloway.co.uk/product/7048

well I'm thinking it's not black and white because the wraps though very old are in pretty good condition. The Tiger thread looks like a good match but again it's got to come overseas and at the cost of 15.64 pounds. The one I saw on EBAY is gone or I could by six spools for 60.00 which is a good price but I don't need six spools of old thread. I played around with using Black and Yellow threads and wtwisting them as I wrapped to see what effect I would get and it's really not to bad considering the wrap I need to make is less than half an inch long. Here is what I have: (assuming I am doing this right)

You can't find Bullard because they sold the business and closed up shop. They sold to Voodoo rod building who might be able to get you what you need. Another option is Superior Threads twist. It is trilobal polyester. It is good stuff but may have a lubricant coating which means you'd need to use CP or some other coating prior to epoxy. Their color selection is hard to beat.

Varnished wraps would still look good, they'd just have a yellowing over time, but could affect a white. that was just a quick hit link. i googled it again and found it at mudhole and angler's workshop. both are main sources for rodbuilding supplies, and more. It's odd that they don't say what size thread it is, A? C? but a phone call would clear that up quickly.

Thanks Eric!

I looked at both places and ordered from Mud Hole because their shipping was less. Settled on the Amber/Black and think it will be a good match. This particular rod is circa 1939 and I do want to match it as closely as I can and I think this thread may do the trick :)
