yooperflyfisher 0 Report post Posted February 13, 2019 Does anyone fly fish for lake trout in 15-35 feet of water with full sinking flies. If so what sinking lines are the best? And what flies. What fly tying materials for pike flies i have'nt really really tied big streamers.
Meeshka 0 Report post Posted February 13, 2019 YUP, been up to Great Bear Lake NWT more than 1/2n a dozen times over the years. Found that lead core line with a 20# mono leader was the best on a mooching reel, and I go big a 13wt 8' custom fly rod. Truly a trolling rig for big lakers. We occasionally see small pods of 6 - 10 lb fish on the surface and for that I use an 8 wt standard set up, floating line, 9' leader, topped with a clouser. Gun the boat, cut the motor, coast in and start casting - now thats FUN! About a 15 lb Red Fin, casting a clouser About a30 lb Grey, trolling. My best is 45#, but I can't find the pic on this computer. All the Best, Doug
Meeshka 0 Report post Posted February 13, 2019 PS: If using lead core keep the mono leader short 4 - 5 feet

Mark Knapp 0 Report post Posted February 13, 2019 Yep. Me too. I do it at the mouths of streams, either the inlet or the outlet. During smolt runs is best but all summer works. I use mostly streamers on a 5 wt. with 9ft. leader. Also in the lake with 30 ft. of T20 behind 70 ft. of T14. We watch the fish finder to locate the fish. Set up the drift and count the fly down. Streamers again. 9wt.
Philly 0 Report post Posted February 13, 2019 Can't help you with lake trout. The only fish I've gone after at those depths are walleye. I use an Orvis Depth Charge fly line. It's a sink tip, not a full sinking line. Pike flies I can help you with. Here are a couple that I've used. I also use them in salt water. I've caught most of my pike on this one. The hook is a Daiichi. Can't remember it's numeric designation, maybe a 2411. Wide gape, 2 XL, possibly 4 XL, heavy wire, 3/0 Materials. Tail: Buck Tail, Flash, six Saddle hackles. Body: Alternating wraps of White Spey Hackle and long Pearl Estaz. You can use large webby saddle hackle in place of the spey hackle. Google Bob Popovics, "Semper Fleye" Mine is based on it Basically the same fly as the first one. Tied on a 2/0 Eagle Claw 413CAT. Salt water Jig hook Hook: Partridge CS43 4/0 Body: White Mirror Image. High Tied Head: Red Artificial Hair. I transferred the material to an unmarked plastic bag, so no name . It may not be available these days Also tied on a 2/0 Eagle Claw 413CAT Body: White Mirror Image. High Tied Head: one of the Puglisi body wraps, Gray with silver flash. These are light weight flies. 6 to 8 inches long. I can cast them with my 6 wgt. Shouldn't be a problem with an 8 wgt. I'm sure someone will get back to you on the lake trout and what flies to use. Meeshka 0 Report post Posted February 13, 2019 This is what I'm using quite a bit for LT these days. This tube fly I bought from Dave Trimble (he uses them for mako sharks) for the pattern and the way they are tied. Go to colors for me are flo red dorsal, charruse ventral, overall length about 8 inches. Because I release all but a small shore lunch fish, I find it much easier to look at just the hooks than the whole fly in the mouth
