  1. Nice! Is this posted in the pattern database with a materials list? Would like to tie some. Rob
  2. Not sure who tied it or what it is. If it works, that is all that matters. I might have to tie a few up. Thanks for sharing, Rob
  3. j74snook and everyone on the FTF, My apologies for contributing to the continuance of the :bs: I got a little angry with the tone and instead of ignoring it, I kept posting back. Won't happen again, Rob
  4. Intolerance? You started this tirade against Fred for offering a tip on your crayfish. People replied to your tirade with their opinions and you got "pissy" and made a bunch of generalized statements about the low caliber of this forum and the people on it. It appears that you think you are better than some on this forum. You are not. As far as me being intolerant, I am not intolerant of anyone. I just have a hard time understanding how someone can dislike the forum (in its current state) as you do and yet you are still here. If you think differently than others on the forum, I understand that but you shouldn't complain when others disagree with your thinking. It is not intolerance when people disagree with you, it is just a different opinion. Maybe my comment about "getting your panties in a bunch" was a little over the top. I think your reply to Fred and some of the others who posted their opinions on this topic was over the top also. Why don't we both give it a rest and let this topic die. Sincerely, Rob
  5. If you are not happy with the people on the forum and you feel we are beneath you, my suggestion would be that you go somewhere else. I am not sure what you mean by big fly tyers. Famous people? People who have been tying flies for a long time? People who have have their own TV shows, books, etc... It doesn't matter how long people have been a member of the forum. You know nothing about any of us so making general statements is ignorant. Relax and don't get your panties in a bunch. Rob
  6. When I ordered about a month ago, I got the 2007, 2008 and the upcoming 2009 issue (September 09?) for the price of 2 magazines. One of the finest if not the finest fly tying magazine out there. You will not be disappointed. Rob
  7. Imaomao, WTF? Am I missing something? What does your post here have to do with the topic started by yeoldkiller? Way off topic. Annoying! Rob
  8. BDH, Congrats to both you and your wife. :yahoo: 11.4 is a pretty big boy. Strong and healthy. Name? Babies are the greatest thing in the world! Enjoy Rob
  9. Flytying is an art to some, a hobby to others and a means to an end (catching fish) for most of us. Most of us tie flies to fool fish into eating what we create. I joined this forum to interact with poeple who have the same interests I do. I feel this forum is here so people can communicate with each other about similar interests and learn from each other. Let me say this. I have read all of the posts on this topic and I wanted to ignore it an not comment but just couldn't help myslef. I do not know either of the combatants in this ruckus, but I would like to say that I find it a little disconcerting that an individual would post a picture of a "Fly" that they tied and then get angry when someone comments on how they feel it doesn't look right. We all post our flies to show the world what we can do. We all want that self serving pat on the back. It is human nature. Look at me, look what I can do, etc... It is also human nature to get upset when we are critisized. In saying that, there are a very large number of tiers on this forum. Some beginners, some hobbiests, and some professionals with thousands upon thousands of flies through their vices. We all have our opinions. Let's cut to the chase. I feel that if you are going to post a fly you tie to the forum, you should be prepared to receive compliments and criticisms alike. Constructive criticims is helpful. We all know what they look like. "Very nice, but I think the wing is to long, or you shouldn't have clipped the hackle, or the body for that fly is made of a different material, etc..." Destructive criticism are things like "that is wrong, those suck, etc..." That type of criticism should not be used. I enjoy sharing any knowledge I have with others, that is just me. If you choose not to share your secrets, that is your business. People learn by trial and error and a lot of time or a little help from someone who already knows how to do it and has already made the mistakes. I may be wrong but it is my opinion Rob
  10. Here is an update to the Supreme Hopper pattern after a day of field testing on Cutthroat. The fish love the pattern. I hooked a lot and I do mean a lot of fish on this fly. However, I had some issues landing the fish. They kept getting off. The cuts were not in a rush to hit the fly. They followed it slowly and lazily came up for the fly. I fished some Caddis and the fish hammered them. My assumption is that the cuts knew the hopper wasn't going anywhere so they had all day. It was great watching them follow it down river and then slowly open their mouth and take the hopper. Things I would change about the fly. I would use a longer shank hook so the hook sat farther back toward the tail for a better hook-up (an assumption). I would use different wing material. The River Foam lost all color and turned white. Not sure that hurt the fly but did not look very good after a dozen fish. I would mark the bodies a little heavier as the water diluted the coloring even though I used a sharpie marker. I would use a heavier leader as the fly is so light, you need the heavier leader to turn the hopper over. Rob
  11. Yes the are bicycle tubes. Mine happen to be supper lite race tubes, which makes them a little bit thiner. I am sure you can get a life time supply down out the local bike shop. There should be no need to buy a new tube, the shop should have a ton of dead ones. My tube is only shighty thicker than nymph skin. Thanks for the clarification. Rob
  12. I normally buy Whiting capes and saddles, however I was in Cabelas last week and they had Jay Fair grizzly saddles on sale. Regularly $39.95 marked down to $19.95. I pulled all 3 that they had from the bags and all were great saddles. The feathers were long and the barbs were really fine. Stems were good also. I was really impressed as I have never bought a Jay Fair saddle before. I have never bought a saddle or cape without seeing it so I am not sure what to tell you if you are mail ordering. Hooks are always a good choice since you know what you will be getting. Rob
  13. Loren, I think you misinterpreted my directions. The flank feather of a pheasant should be tied on like a soft hackle from the tip. You can tie it in from the stem if you want. I prefer tying in from the tip. I prefer 2 to 3 wraps and then I tie back slightly over the fibers with the thread to lay the hackle down. Look at your fly and then look at the sample you posted. In learning to tie, always have a sample and try and recreate it. Rob
  14. I am going to say it because I know most of us are thinking it. April would be the perfect fishing partner. She is beautiful, smart, funny and can she catch fish. Probably better than most of us. Nice article. Where was she when I was single? :hyst:
  15. i know there is a how above but it doesnt show how to do the pheasant feathers on the front. im a beginner so i dont know too terribly much. thanks Loren Loren, I will try and explain what I do. I tie mine in by the tip of the feather. Take a flank feather and hold it by the stem in the wet fly position over your hook with the stem to the rear of your hook. I tie everything away from me over the top so I would remove the barbs on the far side of the feather. I then stroke the remaining barbs back and and clip off the tip and tie in by the tip. I wrap away from me and carefully stroke the barbs to the back. The reason I remove one side is because the barbs on the underside of the wrap have a tendency to splay out at odd angles instead of laying flat along the body. Hope that helps. Rob
  16. What type of inner tube? Inner tube material seems awfully thick? Bicycle? Rob
  17. My pet peeve is people who decide that the fishing run you are in is the one they want and they are not shy about moving in and taking over. I was fishing a river last fall in late October. 99% of all people around here stop fishing this river in September. A gravel road travels 40 miles of the river. I drove to the headwaters early one morning and never saw another fisherman in the 40 miles. My plan was to fish back down the river. I found a run I wanted to fish of about 100 yds and waded out and started fishing. About 5 minutes into the run, a minivan from another state pulled up and 3 guys got out and started wading out into the run with me. One of the guys walked up to within 20 feet of me and started casting. I asked him if there were any other runs on the river they could have fished (in October, the river is low with continuous runs for cutthroat and bull trout the whole length of the river). He made some smartassed reply and continued fishing. I waded to shore (I wanted to flatten their tires but I didn't), got in my truck and drove about a mile downriver and fished the rest of the day without seeing another fisherman. I would have been pissed off for the rest of the day but the fishing was great. I have fished with people from the state the 3 dorks were from and have never seen this type of behavior from anyone else. The dorks must have been abused as children to have such lousy manners.
  18. Here is my story. I fly fish a river that is designated no bait (artificial only) and a single barbless hook. It has been that way for 20 years. One evening I was casting to a seam on a stretch of river with not another person in sight either direction for probably a mile when I heard a vehicle pull up on the gravel road above me. I heard the door slam but I ignored it. I am used to people watching me fly fish or walk down and ask me how things are going. I could hear the peson coming down the rocky bank toward me and stop. I usually ignore people unless they say something. I continued to fish casting up into the seem when a split shot sinker and a worm come flying over my shoulder and across my fly line. Needless to say we were all tangled up. I was shocked to say the least. I stripped in my line, dragging his mess of crap and untangled it. I then told him in the politest voice that "I do not mean to butt into your business but this river is designated artifical only and that you cannot use bait." The guy looked at me and said (F@#$ You). I was instantly pissed but instead of punching him in the forhead (as I am a bleeder), I reeld up my line, walked up onto the bank, got out my digital camera and took his picture along with the worm container on the rock next to him. That really pissed him off where he yelled a few more expletives in my direction. I then walked up to his pickup and took a picture of the license plate. He was still screaming at me when I left. I sent both photographs and a written statement to the local fish and game office. Not sure what happened to him if anything. I now carry my .40 in my vehicle. The situation could have gotten ugly. To many idiots in the world and not enough bullets. Just kidding. I don't condone it but I understand.
  19. Congrats Thesher. Great article. I am going to read it a few times and spend some time with my camera. Rob
  20. Thanks. I see you are a Beavers Fan. I am a Coug! I work at WSU and work with OSU quite a bit on certain projects. Rob Yes, I grew up in Coeur d'Alene area and followed the Cougs as a kid. My brother is Coug. But my wife and I graduated OSU so we are Beavers through and through. We come to Lewiston quite a bit. I'm in Enterprise, so most of our commerce is in Clarkston/Lewiston. Love Wallowa and the Cap. Haven't had the chance to hike into some of the lakes in the Cap but am planning a trip for someday. Rattlesnake is always a fun drive. You fish the Rhonde? Have the gear but have never fished for Steelies? I am planning that this fall. Fished the Imnaha for rainbows. Caught a ton of bull trout. Hot in the canyon in the summer months. And lets not forget the rattlesnakes. Nice talking with you. Rob I fish the Ronde on the Oregon stretch but haven't below Boggan's. Planning a float from Boggan's in the next month or two for the first time. Heading into the Eagle Caps Saturday. Going to try and get over to the Clearwater this fall for steelies. I have been here for just 3 years so still getting to know some of the water. I used to night fish for steelies in the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake until I sold my jet boat. I drift jigs on the Clearwater but I have never fly fished it. I have an 8# and a spey rod and have never used either. I kow, I know. How can I not use them. I just never have learned how to fly fish for steelies. I plan to change that this fall. Rob
