  4. I am going to tie a light cahill catskill style
  5. I just jump right in if I don't like them I take the razor blade to it and start over sometimes I don't like the 10th one or the 20th one the same thing razor blade and start over
  6. would love to see some pictures of the finished flies I am sure they are creative and great
  7. use a finer chenille and don't use so many thread wraps to secure your material then you should end up with a neater head
  8. hey if it turns up you'll have twice as many flies and if not now your covered
  9. you could still get the scap feathers from the baikal teal there are place's that sell whole birds and bird skins for taxidermy purposes. You would have to process the skin yourself and baikal teal are quite expensive the last price I remember seeing was $400.00 per pair ( hen and drake) they are a cool little bird from asia.
  10. I usually go one weight up I would get a wf 11 weight line if it were me. I think that by doing that it makes the rod load better on the backcast. I am sure not everyone will agree but that just what I think
  11. try searching japanese nymph legs they are silicone rods or use broom bristles for legs you have to use a hot needle to bend them just practice bending them before you have a whole fly tied learn how hot to get the needle without burning through your legs it sucks when your fly is finished and you are trying to bend the legs in shape and you accidently burn them off
  12. My flies were mailed today at 2:00 est let me know when you get them. I tied my version of a black stonefly on a size 10 hook don't know if the pattern is named or not, it maybe something I dreamed up but it has worked well for me for the last ten years so I hope you all like it.
  13. my friend is a taxidermist this is what he does after you skin the animal make sure you flesh it ( the skin) very well so there is no fat left on it then they are salted and air dryed until they are completely dried then they go into the chemical tan you can buy the tanning chemicals from mackenzie or wasco be very careful when you tan you have to keep the solution at the right ph and it needs to be checked often, after skin has been in the solution for the right amount of time (times vary by brands) then you neutralize the solution and skin and dry the skin
  14. looks good the largemouth around here love bluegills that should be a killer on them
  15. that sounds awesome I fished the Yellowstone , Madison, and Gallatin they are some great waters. Do you fish in the park at all I have fished all the rivers in there but my favorite was Slough creek must be great to such good trout fishing so close we have some good water here in pa but I think I like the western rivers better
  16. Welcome Scott your tying station is great. What part of Montana are you from and which of the great rivers out there do you fish?
  17. for your wings what about mallard flank feather inside a piece of clear packing tape and trimmed to shape one for each side
  18. we had a huge hatch of cicadas about five years ago it was crazy you couldn't go outside without getting like twenty of them on you and stuck in your hair. I tied a pattern just like a grass hopper I used 8mm black foam cut about twice the width of a hopper slit the bottom with a razor blade to hide the hook then segmented the body tied in krystal flash spent wings and orange rubber legs
  19. maybe we could get together sometime in the summer over the weekend to do a little fishing I am fairly close to several streams the Loyalsock, Lycoming creeks, Grays run and several other small brookie streams are all close. Penns, Spring, Fishing creeks are about an hour to an hour and a half away. I fish all of them often but I am willing to travel if we choose some where else. if anyone is interested in chasing some native brookies shoot me a pm I can go pretty much any sunday.
  20. that's a great job i am going to have to make one of those so I can go out and tie on the deck I will have to add some clamps of some kind to keep the wind from blowing my materials away it is always windy on this hill
