tferg 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2023 Pink Pookie / Dean Reiner / Livingston MT Hook: 2XL nymph hook (this one’s a 12)* Thread: Red UTC Ultra-Thread 140 Denier Foam: 2mm craft foam. Tan foam for the wing, pink for the belly. Under-Wing: Natural deer hair or cow elk. Indicator Post: Small slip of 2mm craft foam– Orange Legs: Rubber legs, medium yellow/black barred * I like a nymph hook instead of a dry. They seem to tip over less on the water. Super glue is my friend with foam flies.

That looks great to me! I’m a sucker for foam flies. Nothing beats a top water bite

niveker 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2023 Ausable Wulff Hook: #12 dry Thread: Fire orange, 8/0 Tail: Woodchuck tail Wing: White calf tail Body: Australian possum dyed burnt orange Hackle: Brown and grizzly Notes: The original pattern, created in the 60's by Ausable River legend and fly shop owner Francis Betters, calls for tailing of woodchuck guard hairs. I prefer the hairs from the tail which are a tad thicker and much stiffer. The tails are cheap and they make a great tailing material. I have read in several places that Mr. Betters' original body was undyed Australian possum, but he changed it to a dyed burn orange after noticing many of the bugs on the Ausable had an orange hue to their bodies, which he attributed to the minerals in the local waters. That may also be the reason for his use of bright orange thread in many of his patterns.
