The challenge thread!

Recommended Posts

Well… deer hair is not my gig. Accepted this challenge because I want to be able to do it. Maybe I just can’t yet. Here is my attempt.

size 4 4xl streamer hook from independent angler, sculpin olive and olive marabou tail. Green and gold flash chinelle, brass wire, olive strung rooster saddle, silver cone, deer hair (or lack there of)

next fly:  grasshopper pattern

I think this is the best part of this thread, taking on a new techniques and patterns. If you trim the longer hairs that are within the clipped portion of the head, I think it looks pretty darn good!

Amy's Ant

Amys-Ant-1.jpg

Amys-Ant-2.jpg

Hook: #12 terrestrial

Thread: 72D, camel

Underbody: Orange craft foam

Overbody: Brown craft foam

Legs: FTD, medium golden stone

Hackle: Brown rooster saddle, trimmed short.

Body: FTD, UV-X rainbow dubbing, hot orange

Underwing: Flashabou

Overwing: Deer hair.

Thorax: FTD, UV-X rainbow dubbing, hot orange

Notes: Created in the 90's by Jack Dennis and named after his daughter, it won the Jackson Hole One Fly tournament in 1999.

Not sure what the original recipe was, but it is most commonly tied using tan and brown foam for the under and over body, respectively; medium brown round rubber legs; olive krystal chenille for the body; rainbow flash for the underwing, and elk for the overwing.

Like many good fly patterns, change the material up as desired.
