novabass 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2012 It only shows a small part, but I thought one of you might know what it is.
Flyman416 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2012 It might be a really old model of a norvise if they made norvises lIke that back then. Becuase norvises have a cylindrical clamp.
flyfishing99 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2012 Not sure about the vise. I really like your fly though.
bluegill576 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2012 maybe it's some sort of home made vise.
novabass 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2012 Actually, I plan to tie that fly, but haven't yet. I found this when reading information about the fly tyer, Pat Barnes. It is a very nice fly for sure!
Bugsy 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2012 Pat Barnes popularized the Goofus Bug, but his wife, Sig, was the primary tyer for their shop. According to sources that visited the shop and watched her tie, Sig tied on a custom/home-made rotary vise that was retrofitted with a sewing machine treadle for foot-powered production tying. The Goofus Bug shown is quite possibly a Barnes-tied pattern clamped in the jaws of that antique, custom vise.
flytire 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2012 i dont think its a novise or even an early version of one
Hot Tuna 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2012 That vise just might be a Thompson model C vise which had a flat head like that. Here's an Ebay listing with a picture of one along with a Thompson Model B http://www.ebay.com/itm/Two-Thompson-vintage-fly-vises-/160715849120?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item256b693da0
riffleriversteelheadslayer 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2012 Bugsy nailed it the vice is one of the home made vices that the Barnes tied on
novabass 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2012 Nice, I didn't realize it might be the custom vise they used. I thought it was some other kind of antique vise. Thanks guys! Stuff like this is very cool.
JohnP 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2012 Not to be argumentative, but the fly looks like a Humpy to me.
utyer 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2012 Humpy Goofus Bug, same thing. You say tomatoe, I say tomatoe. That vise sure looks like Sig's vise.
JohnP 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2012 Humpy Goofus Bug, same thing. You say tomatoe, I say tomatoe. That vise sure looks like Sig's vise. Well, the first trout I caught on a fly I tied was on a Goofus bug, and the pattern did not look like that. But, it matters not ....
