Fly Tying

Recommended Posts

Was trying to catch fish at Kroger park, specifically, Bass using the Tube Popper Fly that worked well at Stoney Hollow Pond. Switched to a Damsel Fly Variant when it did not work, then switched back to the Tube Popper Fly. No luck there, so went with a Guadalupana... it worked. Do check out the video for tips and an idea on the retrieve we used when working the Guadalupana. Liked the fishing fly but did lose two Bass that threw the hook out after the initial hook set. Decided to tie Guadalupanas to replace the one lost this trip. Then, decided to give away two of them instead of the Near Deere Give Away for this month! Finally got the video edited... it's the DIY Tube Popper Fly that we used the other day at Stoney Hollow Pond. The version we used at the pond was painted yellow. These are painted white

Also, used the Mini-Balsa Wood Lathe we made several years ago along with a tube tying attachment on an old vise we keep just for making tube flies. Lathe is not required, can be shaped by had using hand tools and sand paper. Do check it out and give it a try fishing them on your local ponds this Season! DIY Tube Popper Fly

It's a variant of the original Tube Popper Fly we posted in an article several years ago...Tube Popper Fly

Here is a quick tie demo of how we tie the Guadalupana. Same fly we used the other day on a local pond! Uses minimal material, and is simple to tie. Works on trout, bass, and bluegill. Do give it a try, and do keep guessing on our Fishing Fly Give Away of two Guadalupana fishing flies.

One tied with a Palmer Hackle. Other with a Dry Fly Hackle. Both on size 8 streamer hooks. See more and comment in our video posted on our YouTube Channel!

Fly fishing for bass at a local pond using the Guadalupana. Did well last round; same held true this round! Bass were in their beds or cruising the shallows. Also, caught several Bluegill. Fun times on a really nice day; even better to be fishing and catching them on the fly!

Quick trips to two ponds this past Easter Sunday - Sonic Pond and the Lower Pond at Bethany Lakes. Caught a couple of Bass using the Guadalupana and the PMOT - Purple Marabou Orange Thing. Did have a nice one on the line briefly but lost it. Overall, great time fishing on a real nice day!

Made a stop on the way home from work Monday. Rain was in the forecast but was able to catch a Bass and Bluegill or two or more before the rain arrived. Use the TFO 6wt Fly Rod; Echo Ion 6/7/ Wt Reel, and OPST Commando to cast Damsel Flies, a variant of one, and Tube Fly Poppers. The Damsel Fly Variant did well catching them... even had fun catch a nice Bluegill that bent the rod well!

That time of year when kayak fishing and fly fishing conflict... sidetracked kayak fishing yesterday. Was windy but did notice fish were caught within casting distance from the bank!

First kayak fishing trip this year. Fished the local lake (Lake Lavon) on a windy day. Trolled slab and jig rigs and managed to catch a White Bass and a Yellow Bass. Kept them for a catch and cook video to show how to cook them - split them butterfly style from the back, leave the skin and scales, and marinade for a couple of hours, then pan fry till crispy. Also, did a quick demo of why we like the Zebco Rod/Reel combo we use as a backup rod when kayak fishing... it floats!

Went kayak fishing yesterday on the local lake. Caught five Catfish using Shad on Juglines. Filleted them and cooked them blackened fish style. Tasty meal but still got a ways to go before the video is done; will get it posted soon as we can.... For now, did a quick trip with the Telescoping Micro Fly Rod trying to catch a small fish on a size 32 fly. Bluegill took it, switched to a size 18 Griffiths Gnat and caught a Sunfish. Fun times, especially with a rod that fits conveniently in a pocket. Do stay tuned for more on yesterday's kayak fishing video!

Sidetracked with kayak fishing for catfish using jug lines and shad for bait. Fishing partner along with our newest member of the Field Team - Charlie the Maltese Puppy had a great time, despite said puppy having a dunking this round. No worries... life jacket did well plus we caught five Catfish that made for a tasty dinner. Will plan a catch and cook video to show how we cooked them! Question from a YouTube Viewer on fishing the tailrace at Lavon. Provided suggestions and expanded with more info on our blog. May be of interest to some... Q&A ...fishing with spinning gear #lakelavon

It's related to spinning gear but some of the info would apply to fly fishing a river... notably, seams, back eddy, and slack water.

Was not a fly fishing but they do make a fly rod version of this rod....

On a whim bought an EmmRod in their Kayak King Spinning Rod model to use for kayak fishing. Rigged up an old spinning reel that we managed to get working again... 30+ year old reel, and then mounted it on the EmmRod. Took it to a local pond and free-lined bread "mashed" around a circle hook. After about 15" caught a nice Catfish! Not bad for the first cast, first fish on the little rod. Cannot wait to try it kayak fishing!

Liked the EmmRod Kayak King for fishing the local ponds for Catfish. Hope to try it out kayak fishing sooner than later. Decided to order their fly rod model.

It came in today! Opened the box and checked it out. Looks promising. Was trying to decide on mounting the 2/3 Wt Echo Ion Fly Reel with a Rio Trout Max shooting head or the 4/5 Wt Echo Ion Fly Reel with the OPST Commando Head and Lazerline running line.

Still deciding but hope to fish it this weekend, too! More to come!

Liked the EmmRod Kayak King for fishing the local pond for Catfish. Ordered the Fly Rod, arrived yesterday but was not able to fish it till today. Had to make a run to Fort Worth, so brought the EmmRod Fly Rod and several Near Deere fishing flies just in case we had a chance at fishing today. Was able to fish with it on the Trinity River in Fort Worth. Water was high with lots of flow from recent rains. Did manage to catch a few Longear Perch and Sunfish!
