Dubs 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2016 Here are some from this week midges, something I don't do too often, #18 a nymph that has been working for me and an articulated nymph, I have pretty much settled on this after much variation and experimentation it actually looks better in person, unflattering photo... wouldn't mind a few suggestions for improvement, except about a crooked wingcase haha
PJ2 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2016 Thanks Retro. It was a first attempt. any suggestions? Dubs: I really dig the blue articulated. just out of curiosity did you try one with white biot? or Yellow biot? I think it would pop.
retrocarp 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2016 I think this is called a lightning nymph. gold bead, gold tinsel, chartruse wire, peacock, purple dubbing, wing ribbon and pheasant tail, # 14 scud hook. Think this might be my swap nymph. personel 004.JPG Not really ..... I think you're heading in the right direction.Try a few less wraps of thread after each step.....maybe. Dubs 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2016 Thanks PJ2, I stuck with black once I got to biots, but tried different ribbing materials first and leg materials like krystal flash and partridge. I like the material combo I have but now i want to try one with white biots for legs instead
utyer 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2016 Most years, I "start over" in January. By that I mean, I start with the simplest (and smallest) patterns. Usually start out with a dozen or so small midge larvae in size 20 or 22. Once I get those done, I know I am good to go with everything else. For my own flies, I rarely put beads on midges, and keep them as slim as I can.

utyer 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2016 January and February in Florida, means the Shad run is in progress. Plenty of 18 to 22 inch Shad running up the St Johns river until March or April. They are a great fly rod fish, and are not all that fussy on what pattern, as long as its small and near the bottom. At times they will also hit on Mosquito fish patterns stripped near the surface. Here are some of my recent efforts.
mikechell 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2016 If the shad don't hit those, I am sure the Crappie, Bass and Sunfish will.
