Camo Clad Warrior 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2017 Looking to add some smaller sculpin patterns to the box. Looking for smaller patterns with a single hook point. I have seen the sculpzilla patterns but what else is out there?
Rocco 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2017 Most sculpin patterns for trout up unitil a few years ago when big, segmented models with tandem hooks became fairly common were tied on single hooks. By reducing hook size -- down to 8, maybe 10 -- and materials proportionately, any of them will suit your needs. Or, just start with maribou or a rabbit strip back and tail in brown/olive/tran; an off white belly made of some synthetic; some pec fins made of small wing shoulder featehrs; and finish the final third of the shank with a bulky sculpin wool or other synthetic head in a dubbing loop to match the rest of the color scheme. Trmi the head into a V shape and mottle the top of the fly with a black magic marker. Weight it with a split shot on the leader at its nose and add water. Camo Clad Warrior 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2017 Thanks for the help. I was thinking of maybe playing with some of the sculpin helmets that are on the market.
Rocco 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2017 That will work too. There is a simple sculpin pattern that would lend itself to downsizing that uses a rabbit strip for a back and tail, two short sections of rabbit strips for side fins and a body made of dubbing of your choice. The smaller size helmet heads would finish it off. Rocco
Lesg 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2017 The Muddler was the original sculpin pattern. You can tie them in any size that you like. Les P.S. They do really work well when fished on the bottom.

Hazathor 0 Report post Posted October 10, 2017 I've been a big fan of Charlie Craven's Gonga. Step-by-step here. I posted my take on the articulated version in the October flies thread. I've also enjoyed tying Fly Fish Food's El Sculpito & Silent Bob.
