If he wants a thinner profile than .010 there is also some flattened lead or tungsten available at online shops like competitive angler.

Zonker strips can be sliced into strips and wound on the hook shank. Much cheaper than wire, easier to taper, easier to control thickness. You can cut the strip into a triangle and start at the point and mold it into a smooth taper.

Sorry. As I read through the rest of the comments, I lost track of the original question. Unless you sliced the strip pretty thin, the strips wouldn't really be a benefit over wire.

0.10 wire is too heavy for any fly

 

lead fly tying wire comes in .010, .015, .020, .025, .030 and .035 inches in diameter

 

any one of the following shops should have what you want plus ebay
